Corrupted Immortals were eerie abominations that had welcomed Sunny and Jet to the Eternal City.[4][1]
The abominations encountered and fought in Eternal City — the hideous army of immortals — are not actually the immortals themselves, but rather a Nightmare Creature wearing the bodies of the immortals. The immortals' bodies and souls remain intact, but their minds have long crumbled, making them like empty dolls before being taken over. The Flesh of Kanakht therefore acts as a parasite, using those mindless immortal bodies as vessels.[5]
Description
It appeared as a grotesque abomination that wore the exquisite face of a human youth, making it both monstrous and disturbingly beautiful.[1]
Although it possessed the vile darkness of Corruption, it lacked the usual nodes that served as sources of the spreading, tumorous infection typically found in abominations. Because of this, Sunny could not determine its Class, only that it was roughly of the Great Rank. Even Cassie, with her Dormant Ability, could not clearly discern what the creature was. After peering into its essence, she could only describe it as a part of a greater whole hiding inside an usurped vessel, and that the greater whole it is a part of is itself incomplete, longing to be mended.[2]
Ability
Each fallen immortal wielded the might of a Great One, twisting the fabric of reality itself under their blasphemous will.[3]
They have fleshy tentacles lashed out at their enemies, some ending in spikes sharp enough to split a stone statue cleanly in two. Even when severed, these fleshy tendrils continued to move, showing that the creature's body parts retained life independent of its main form.[1]
It was an eldritch horror about as powerful as a Great Beast, effectively a walking calamity. Despite its immense strength, what made it truly terrifying was its immortality. Even when killed many times—by cutting, piercing, crushing, burning, freezing, and even poisoning it with Death Will—the grotesque abomination refused to stay dead. Each time, its crushed, severed, burned, shattered body would return to a flawless state before once again swelling with malformed flesh and bursting into a slithering forest of deadly tendrils.[1]
Its incredible, inexhaustible vitality was not its own but a manifestation of the sorcery that governed the Eternal City, making it effectively immortal within that domain.[1]
Shadows of the Immortals
The shadows of the Immortals were sealed inside a vast spherical void chamber, standing silently on the concave walls and bathed in starlight. They appeared lonesome and lost, and while most of them belonged to humans, some resembled beasts; some were small while others were vast. A few of them were recognizable to Sunny, while the rest were unfamiliar. These shadows had been separated from their owners by the Demon of Repose, who created her immortals by severing living beings from their shadows and sealing the shadows in the heart of the Palace. Because the shadows were imprisoned there, they were prevented from both returning to their owners and traveling to the Shadow Realm. As a result, the prisoners of the Eternal City were immortal, since their deaths existed somewhere else, and those deaths were the shadows imprisoned before Sunny. The chamber itself had been created specifically to trap shadows, cutting off that part of the world from the universal laws of existence and barring passages to the Shadow Realm. When Sunny touched the shadows, they did not respond to commands, but when he cajoled and soothed them, a shadow could hesitantly turn to him and vanish, becoming a new shade added to his legion.[6]
Trivia
- The creature's corrupted immortal form was eventually subdued when Sunny and Jet severed its limbs and bound it with countless black chains, forming a macabre cocoon that trembled as it held the abomination trapped.[1]
- The shadows of the immortals — hundreds of thousands of them — were pulled toward the boundless darkness of the Gate of Shadow in Chapter 2694.
