Chapter 2801 Contagion
Article contents
Red Hill was a small city situated in one of the most remote regions of the Dream Realm, located within the Glass Hell, far away from Bastion and Ravenheart. The Glass Hell bordered the Chained Isles to the east, Godgrave to the west, the deadly Bone Sea to the south, whose poisonous waters could melt human flesh in minutes, and the misty Hollow Mountains to the north.[1]
Because of this isolation, Red Hill rarely saw visitors, except for merchant caravans traveling between Bastion, Ravenheart, and the Lake of Tears. These merchants brought building materials, food, and luxury items, and left carrying mystical glass, which was the city's main export. The Lord of Hell, a Saint, was also a vital source of supplies, capable of bringing resources from the waking world, ensuring the settlement's survival. Saints and Masters played an essential logistical role in sustaining remote settlements like Red Hill.[1]
Inhabitants
The people of Red Hill were visibly divided between those who had more and those who had little, reflected in their homes—wealthier citizens had walls covered with wood or stone, while poorer citizens lived in bare glass dwellings with little privacy. Life in the city was simple and rewarding, centered mainly around hospitality for passing merchants and the mining, processing, and transporting of glass. Glass mining was dangerous, especially if quarries collapsed into tunnels below, releasing abominations from the Hive. The forces of the Maharana clan, led by the Lord of Hell, protected the city, guarded the miners, and ensured the safety of caravans across the region. Though stern and strict, the Lord of Hell was respected, and alongside the guidance of Changing Star, the citizens felt protected, hopeful, and motivated to work toward a better future. As a young settlement still in its founding stage, Red Hill constantly grew and improved, with visible progress occurring every day.[1]
History
When Sunny arrived, he saw that Red Hill had undergone a profound transformation, appearing as if there were two identical cities and Citadels, though this was caused by a colossal Dream Gate with a mirror-like surface reflecting the city. Both the real city and its reflection were filled with people and enormous Nightmare Creatures, forming a vast ocean of abominations with humans peacefully moving among them. Sunny realized that the millions of people and myriad Nightmare Creatures were actually vessels of Mordret, the King of Nothing, meaning the city full of people had been killed and turned into conduits of his fragmented soul. Beneath the tranquil glass plain, Mordret's vessels flooded the tunnels of the Hive, slaughtering abominations, harvesting some for meat and soul shards, and turning others into conduits of his soul. Sunny's reflection then spoke to him, revealing Mordret's presence, and Mordret explained that he had grown tired of being homeless and had made himself a home by claiming the city and Citadel, declaring that the Glass Hell suited him and that it was fitting for him to build himself a castle.[2]
After Red Hill fell, Nephis and the others conducted an investigation into what had happened. Their investigation eventually pointed at Saint Thane, the Dream Merchant, and his treachery was revealed. It was discovered that he had been enthralled, connected to Asterion's influence, demonstrating Asterion's ability to subjugate people without stealing them from the Domain of the Supreme they were loyal to. When the truth of his betrayal came to light, Nephis, consumed by wrath, confronted the Dream Merchant and began burning him with her immolating white flames, repeatedly destroying and restoring his body in order to break Asterion's hex that controlled him.[3]
Trivia
- Red Hill is the Glass Hell region's sole Citadel located near its southern boundary.[4]
- In Chapter 2803, after the inhabitants of Red Hill fell to the plague (Asterion's Thralls), Mordret had made his move. The citizens all across the city stopped to stare at the eerie spectacle of misbehaving reflection in shock, and as they looked at the glistening glass, a merciless presence made its way into their eyes. A litany of screams flooded the streets of Red Hill, making the mystical glass vibrate. There was no blood. There were no corpses, either. But by the time the sun rose the next day, Red Hill was no more.
