A Gateway is a special portal that serves both as an anchor for Awakened entering the Dream Realm and as an exit point for those wishing to leave it. It is different from a Gate.[1][2]
Location
It is usually inside or near the most prominent landmark of the region.[2]
Mechanism
Once Sleepers reached a gateway, they would be able to escape back to reality and become Awakened. Their core would evolve, and receive a second Aspect Ability. After that, they would return to the Dream Realm each time they fall asleep.[2]
If the gateway is destroyed, it meant that the Awakened is going to be transported to a random one as soon as he falls asleep, just like during the first journey into the land of nightmares. The only way for a newly Awakened to change their anchor without relying on chance is to acquire the services of a Saint, who would be able to take them to the Dream Realm without involving the Spell, appearing near the Saint's own anchor.[3]
Changing an anchor was as simple as using another Gateway.[4]
Gateway and Tether
There seemed to be a strange reaction between the Gateway and the forming tether as if they had been created to exist together. Claiming a Citadel by imprinting on its Gateway is the same process as placing a tether but deeper and different because it creates a replica of the citadel within a Saint's soul sea.[5]

| Forgotten Shore | Crimson Spire | A circular dais with a wide iron ring submerged into its stone surface. Around the ring, a beautiful pattern of runes shimmered with light. The stone surface surrounding the ring was devoid of growths of crimson coral.[6] To use the Gateway, a person must be placed in the center of the iron ring. When this happens, the runes surrounding the ring flash with shimmering light, and the body of the person standing within begins to shine as well. The glow starts dim but becomes brighter and brighter until the human form can no longer be distinguished. Finally, the light dissipates much like a Memory or an Echo would, leaving nothing behind.
