The clan in possession of this Citadel would gain a staggering advantage in the task of reaching the Tomb of Ariel, so Morgan and Madoc had put a lot of effort into keeping that information secret. They had even kept reinforcements to a minimum to not risk revealing Knight Shtad's location through irregular troop movements.[1][2]

Location

It was somewhere in a vast desert, a battlefield where the gods supposedly died.[3] Apparently, the desert had been one of the last battlefields between Daemons and the Gods.[4]

Origin

Reveal

The Black Skull is described as a huge skull, entirely black and possessing three eyes. It was associated with the Nephilim, as Azarax identified the three eyes as the sign of the Void, a sign of the angels and of what angels touch, which the Nephilim also bore, though they often choose to hide their third eye. The skull is connected to a significant battle, referred to as the Battle of the Black Skull, where many people died, yet the Citadel for which they fought ultimately ended up ownerless. The Black Skull was likely a Nephilim, a being considered an abomination because it combined aspects of both the Divine and the Unholy, existing outside the natural order of Flame or Void. Its precise history remains unclear, but it appears to have played a pivotal role in ancient conflicts, and its remains now lie somewhere in the Nightmare Desert.[5]

Trivia

  • Its gate was situated in an extremely dangerous part of Antarctica in proximity to Song's territory where it became the hunting grounds of a Corrupted Titan.[3] But in Chapter 1191, it was revealed that the Titan was actually a Transcendent Echo of Morgan.
  • The location of the Nightmare Gate that led to the vicinity of the Black Skull was of paramount importance. In Chapter 1176, no one except for Mordret was anchored to the Gateway of the Citadel.[6]
