The Underworld was situated beneath the Hollow Mountains. This Death Zone was the very dark and cavernous domain to which the Prince of the Underworld had retreated after his conflict with the Goddess of the Black Skies.[1][2]

Description

Its halls and caverns were filled with True Darkness.[3]

It serves as a boundary between the living and the dead and therefore connected to the Realm of Death.[4]

In Chapter 3065, the illuminated the dark expanse of the Underworld, revealed landscape consisted of a desolate vista with rough, uneven stone ground, jagged rocks, and what appeared to be ruins barely visible at the edge.

At the base of the Hollow Mountain, on the boundary between the upper and middle strata of the Underworld. The cavern Sunnny, Nephis and Saint had entered was already part of the core expanse of Nether's realm, but the Underworld was not one gigantic subterranean space. Instead, it was composed of countless interconnected caverns, some relatively small and others as large as underground continents. Since the mountain had an established path to the surface world, there should once have been a small settlement of the Stone Saints somewhere within that cavern.[5]

Although many imagined the Underworld as a dark, cavernous expanse of desolate stone and a lifeless desert hidden in the depths of the earth, Nephis explained that it also contained great subterranean rivers connecting its distant regions. There was even a vast underground ocean, inhabited by frightening depth dwellers, according to stories she had heard during her Second Nightmare. The Stone Saints had relied on these waterways to transport cargo and connect their settlements, so most settlements were located along the shores of one of the three largest rivers. Because there was supposed to be a Stone Saint settlement in the cavern they had entered, there was a high chance that one of these rivers flowed through it as well.[5]

Entrance

The path to the Underworld was described as being on the weathered edifice of a towering mountain, hidden by flowing white mist. Its entrance was a dark fissure that brimmed with cold, impenetrable darkness. The portal was framed by tall pillars carved from black rock, and above it was a triangular pediment adorned with masterful reliefs. Time had eroded their edges, leaving only unclear shapes of dark wings forming an intricate pattern. Rather than resembling a road descending into hell, the path to the Underworld looked like an entrance to a temple.[6]

The tunnel was entirely devoid of any features. Its walls seemed to have once been adorned with masterful reliefs and engravings, but these had been erased by the merciless passage of time and the endless tides of the eerie white mist. The walls were covered in a chaotic mess of jagged grooves and deep fractures, and several sections of the tunnel had collapsed, forcing passage through ancient rocks. Deeper inside, the fractured walls and crumbling ceiling gave way to sections that looked formed from molten lava, while smooth, strangely shaped rocks were scattered throughout, indicating that impossibly fierce flames had once raged there, melting the walls and incinerating everything trapped in the darkness. The floor of the tunnel was covered with countless jagged rocks resting atop a thin layer of white powder, which was revealed to be bone dust. As the passage continued, more and more bones appeared until the whole tunnel was carpeted by them like a vast graveyard, preserving the remains of a great number of living beings that had perished there.[7]

The tunnel eventually opened into a colossal spherical stone chamber, its vast expanse drowned entirely by darkness. Even almost blinding radiance could not reach the opposite wall. The chamber contained the skeletal remains of countless humans and enormous beasts, broken weapons littering the floor, and the ruined remains of makeshift barricades and defensive fortifications that had once barred the mouth of the tunnel. Most of the chamber's floor was entirely carpeted with stone shards, which piled into tall mounds.[7]

Among the rubble were the shattered remnants of countless Stone Saints, recognizable by fragments such as a broken head showing the contour of a brow, the recess of a closed eye, the broken remnant of a nose, and the corner of a slightly parted mouth. These were the remnants of Children of Nether, who had turned to stone after their deaths.[7]

Three Layers

Reveal

Contrary to the common belief that the Underworld was a single space buried deep underground, it actually consisted of roughly three layers, each more dangerous than the one above it. Rather than being one titanic cavern, it was an interconnected system of many enormous hollows.[8]

  • The uppermost and safest stratum was hidden inside the Hollow Mountains themselves, whose peaks were enormous vertical caverns that widened from top to bottom. This upper layer had once contained the settlements of the Stone Saints and served as the point where the Underworld connected to the outside realms. During the height of the Stone Saint civilization, it functioned as a commercial hub where outsiders came to trade, travel to other realms through the Underworld, or perform burial rites and sacral vigils to ensure a safe journey for the shadows of their dead.[8]
  • The middle stratum, located below the mountains and submerged in ancient darkness, formed the true heart of the Stone Saint civilization. It housed Nether's throne and the city surrounding it, where most of the Stone Saints lived close to the stronghold of their creator.[8]
  • Beneath it lay the lower stratum, the deepest region of the Underworld, concealed in lightless depths that were too dreadful and hazardous even for the Stone Saints to inhabit. This lowest layer contained the chasm leading to the Abyss and was inhabited by unfathomable horrors born of the true darkness.[8]
It was also the only part of the Underworld Nephis had personally visited during her Second Nightmare, where she inhabited the broken body of one of Nether's failed creations and attempted to build a community of outcasts before it was destroyed by a horror that rose from the Abyss. Although she lacked firsthand knowledge of the upper and middle strata, the stories shared by the other outcasts provided enough information for Sunny to infer that, since the Stone Saints had lived in the upper and middle layers, the Seed of Nightmare connected to Broken Sword's final expedition was most likely located there, making the least harrowing upper stratum the logical place to begin their search.[8]

Settlements

The Underworld contained many settlements, but only one city — the city where Nether, the Demon of Destiny, had reigned.[9]

Sunny saw its magnificent spires when he touched the String of Fate that connected him to Shadow Weave. The city was later described as the fallen city of the Demon of Destiny, which Broken Sword appeared to have reached after fleeing into the darkness of the Underworld. The city was connected to the ruthless battle between the four Supremes, where Broken Sword, Neph's father, had been fatally wounded by his former companions.[9]
  • Nether's City - a magnificent stone city built at the edge of an abyssal chasm in the heart of the Underworld.[10]

Inhabitants

Even though Nether ruled the Underworld, there are many others living in its darkness.[3]

Followers of Nether
  • They were the remains of the army he led to wage war on Storm God.[3]
  • They lived in the great hollows within the peaks.[3]
Stone Saints
  • They are the children of Nether.[3]
  • They lived below the Mountains, in the Heart of the Underworld.[3]
Discarded and outcast creatures
  • They lived near the very bottom of the dark abyss.[3]
Dark Drifters
  • In Chapter 3058, a Dark One encountered in the Underworld disguised itself as a crude, misshapen stone knight by using the remains of dozens of slain Stone Saints as a shell. Unlike Nightmare Creatures, it possessed no soul, soul cores, or tumors of Corruption—there was only darkness within it.

Creatures of the Underworld

Many creatures in the Underworld were abandoned and discarded, some the result of Nether's failed attempts to create the Stone Saints, and some were outcasts and derelicts.[3]

Besides the abandoned creatures, there were other terrifying things as well that were born from the darkness and hunt creatures. There were also ancient horrors dwelling in the very depths of the abyss that would crawl from below to devour other creatures.[3]

Underworld's relationship with shadows

To reach the Shadow Realm, shadows must first pass through the Underworld, a realm drowning in true darkness that is inherently hostile to shadows. Upon reaching the Shadow Realm, the shadows are destroyed and ground into pure soul essence.[5]

Background

After Nether lost his war against the Storm God, he secluded himself in the Underworld, becoming its ruler and focusing on creating the Stone Saints.[3]

Trivia

  • Nephis's Second Nightmare confirmed that the Underworld is below the Hollow Mountains.[3]
  • The Realm of Death has always been linked to the Underworld, acting as a boundary between the living and the dead. In the current state of the realms, it now exists directly beneath the Underworld.[11]
  • The entrances to the Underworld were described by Mordret as quite inviting, and he had mapped at least half a dozen of them during the past year in the Hollow Mountains. However, he had never attempted to explore them, explaining that elemental darkness is an enemy of reflections.[12]
  • The Underworld known to Nephis dated back thousands of years, before the world-ending war between its ruler and the gods, so she could not know how much it had changed. Sunny noted that the realm hidden beneath the vast Hollow Mountains had to be immense, recalling that it had taken him more than a year to cross the mountain range. The main city of the Stone Saints was said to be hidden in the heart of the Underworld, where Nether himself had dwelled.[5]
