“ There once were terrible creatures born of an unholy union between the divine and the profane. Nephilim were the most beautiful, and the most harrowing of them all. ”

― Spell's Attribute Description of Nephilim,
Chapter 353 Light Bringer

Nephilim were described as terrible creatures born from an unholy union between the divine and the profane. The divine and unholy were inherently opposed, so it was unknown how Nephilim were born. They were also the most beautiful and harrowing of all.[1][2]

Origin

“ They are indeed children of an unholy union between the divine and the profane — something that should not have existed, but did. It does make some sense, I guess, considering that the gods themselves were an especially harrowing kind of Void Beings. The most harrowing kind, maybe. ”

― Eurys to Sunny,
Chapter 2267 Unwelcome Choice

Nephilim are believed to be the offspring of gods, themselves a form of harrowing Void Beings according to Eurys, and Void beings—potentially Angels. Their existence is considered unnatural, even heretical. The exact nature of their birth remains unknown, and no clear account exists to confirm how this union was made possible. However, Eurys speculates that the Sun God, the god of passion, may have been responsible.[3]

Nature and Traits

“ Nephilim were not welcome anywhere, so they usually kept to themselves. ”

― Eurys to Sunny,
Chapter 2267 Unwelcome Choice

  • The Nephilim are not described in physical detail, but their existence alone is viewed as a paradox—something that should not exist. Despite this, they are capable of forming bonds with others, and at least one Nephilim, Nephis, is known to have been close to Sunny.[3]
  • Nephilim are not welcomed by gods, humans, or voidspawn alike, and are often forced to live in isolation.[3]
  • Nephilim are directly identified by their three eyes. Azarax called this the sign of the Void, the sign of the angels and what angels touched. Although they usually choose to hide their third eye.[4]

Background

Nephilim played a significant role in the cosmic conflict between the Nether and the Divine Host. When Nether rebelled against the gods, the Nephilim chose to fight alongside the army of Demons, standing against the divine forces. Many perished in the war, dying one after another in the battle against the gods.[3]

Trivia

  • It was speculated that Nephis's duality was further expressed after she had conquered her First Nightmare and received her Aspect, to which this Attribute [Nephilim], described a half-blood creature: half divine, half profane.[1]
  • In Chapter 500, Eurys finds a Nephilim revolting, but also pities Nephis for being cast into hell alive.
  • Neph's Ascended Ability, Longing, made her immune to Corruption[5], which seemed impossible knowing that divine and the unholy were inherently opposed and strive to obliterate each other.[2]
  • Nephis carried the lineage of Sun God, but her Aspect was connected to the mythical Nephilim.[6]
  • Despite their terrifying power and the fact that they joined Azarax's army to fight against the gods, their presence was unwelcome.[4]
  • The colossal skeleton, once belonging to a creature of immense size — at least ten thousand kilometers tall, later known as Godgrave. Sunny noted that someone managed to kill this creature, although its origins are mysterious. Azarax expressed disbelief that such a giant could exist, stating that only the World Tree could compare in scale and asserting that it could not have been a Nephilim. Despite this, the skeleton that became Godgrave is associated with the Void. Sunny also observed that Azarax appeared unaware of the being whose remains became Godgrave.[4]
