Article contents
The Hell of Ariel is described as a desolate and isolated realm that was turned into a hell by the Demon of Dread. Unlike other hells, it is uniquely isolated and connected to only one other land, the Underworld. Because it was dead and isolated, it became a favored place for the gods to confine anything they hated, feared, or wished to punish, which contributed to its fearsome reputation in myths.[3]
Additionally, it served as a prison for shadows of living beings who had been denied death, trapping them permanently if they became lost on their journey through the Underworld. Over time, these trapped souls were consumed and eradicated when the Hell of Ariel became a battlefield to prevent them from posing a threat. Despite its fearsome reputation, the realm's selection as a battlefield by the Demon Legion and the Divine Host was practical: it offered a large, isolated area suitable for conflict without creating additional hells. Even though it was close to the Underworld, most participants never reached the Realm of Death.[3]
Inner Circle
The inner expanse of Ariel's Hell is far more dangerous compared to the outer areas. As Azarax explained, this inner expanse of the desert is where only the most elite armies of the Demon Legion and the Divine Host clashed for the right to rule hell. Because of this, it is implied that the beings inhabiting this region are the worst fiends who dwell in this land. The proximity to this inner expanse also signaled an escalation in threat, with the expectation that they may encounter Sacred Beasts of the high commanders.[4]
Trivia
- While many desolate mortal realms had been called hells, the Hell of Ariel was unique because it was isolated from all other lands and connected only to the Underworld. Azarax explained that it became favored by the gods, who used it to contain everything they hated, feared, or wanted to punish, and it was even used by parents to scare their children.[3]
