Gods and Daemons

Gods

Main article: Gods

The gods were dead just like everything else in the Dream Realm. They seem to have been alive in the time periods of many of the Nightmares, but based on the ruins encountered and explored, the gods are mostly described as destroyed. It is unknown what or who destroyed the gods and if they existed before or after the Nightmare Spell appeared.[1]

The gods worshipped in different regions had different names, but they all described the same entities. The current consensus is that the "gods" of the Dream Realm were perhaps creatures of the Divine Rank. Their gender seems to be very mercurial, they can be referred to by both genders.[1]

There were only six known gods initially, but their most common names don't do them justice.[1] In Chapter 1570, it was confirmed that there was a seventh god.

Common Names Other Names
War God Deity of warfare, God of life, Goddess of War, Goddess of Life, Goddess of Progress, Technology, Craft, and Intellect, Patron Goddess of Humanity.
Beast God Goddess of the Moon, hunting, carnal desire, blood, beauty, and the cycle of birth and death.
Sun God Lord of Light, a manifestation of fire, passion, creation, and destruction.
Storm God God of the depths, of the oceans, of darkness, stars, travel, guidance, disaster, etc.
Shadow God God of peace, death, solace, and mysteries.
Heart God God of Souls, emotion, memory, hunger, and growth.
Dream God God of dreams, nightmares, restoration, imagination, oblivion and fate.

Daemons

Main article: Daemons

Daemons were beings that were partially divine or even almost as powerful as the gods themselves. They are mysterious creatures described as having power almost equal to that of the gods but of a different nature. Initially, they seemed to have created themselves or at least appeared out of nowhere.[1]

Almost nothing is known about them, except for the fact that there were seven of them, one more terrible than the other. They were terrifying creatures that came out of nowhere, wielding enough power to wage war against the heavens. The unknown is what the humans fear the most, and the gods are no exception.[1]

Bone Weave

It was revealed in the runes of Bone Weave that the seven daemons were children of the mysterious -unknown-. At some point, the children of the unknown rebelled against the gods, except for Weaver, who was the only one to refuse the call of war.[2]

[...When children of the -unknown- rebelled against the gods, Weaver was the only one to refuse the call of war. Despised and hunted by both sides, they disappeared. No one knew where Weaver went and what they did… until it was too late.]

Slave's Inheritance

According to the runes of Shadow God's lineage (Drop of Ichor), Unlike the Unknown, the -unknown- were a type of creatures, primordial beings that existed before time, space, and death, in a boundless dark void. The gods were different from them but also their kin. It was now clear what terrible enemy the gods had faced long before the daemons and their rebellion. The reason Shadow God had been compelled to create Death. The gods won but the primordial void had not been destroyed, only that it had been "bound".[3]

[Before, there was only boundless, eternal void. From that dark abyss, the -unknown- were born. Just like chaos itself, they were endless and everlasting, vast and forever changing. But then came desire, and with it came direction. From it, the gods were born.

When gods appeared, the void was not eternal anymore.

When gods appeared, the darkness was not endless anymore.

When gods appeared, the chaos was not orderless anymore.

The gods appeared, and brought with them war. This drop of divine blood was spilled by Shadow on one of the battlefields of that war, before the void was bound.]

In the Darkness

Legends says that a terrible creature was slain by the gods once, at the dawn of time, whose blood seeped into the earth, forming true darkness. The dark creature must have been a being of the Void, greater than an Unholy Titan.[4]

Ancient Mural

According to the legends, after the gods sealed the primordial void, Weaver was the only one of those who had entered the eternal abyss and managed to return alive.[5]

The gods had sealed the eternal void, from which they were born. The unknown were creatures of that void, while the Unknown was a specific being that had somehow given life to the seven daemons. The reflection of either was forever frozen in the depths of Weaver's eyes.[5]
Frozen Reflections

In the eye of the time storm, are the reflections of the gods and of the daemons that slayed them.[6] It was unknown if all gods and daemons reflected in the waters inside the eye of the time storm.[7]

Testament of Dread

The daemons had not appeared out of nowhere, nor had they created themselves, but were born from the seven pieces of the seventh god, The Forgotten God, who had previously been the Dream God. Their existence was forbidden, making it seem as if they appeared from nowhere, as no one was allowed to remember the Forgotten God.[8] (Refer to Hidden Truth)

Reveal

In the Second Nightmare, Noctis warned Sunny not to trust the gods[9]. The gods were liars, leaving one of their own in a cage to imprison the Void. This led to the creation of the universal law of imperfection, which gave the gods the final push to seal the Void. This made the Forgotten God their Flaw, and the daemons, born from his soul, living incarnations of that Flaw.[8]

Hope, imprisoned by the Sun God, had her kingdom destroyed after mortals started worshiping her. The gods forbid the knowledge of the Forgotten God from spreading, but there was something deeper hiding behind the lie. The law of imperfection meant that everything in the world, including the gods, was imperfect, and the seal on the Void could be broken. This meant the Forgotten God could one day break free from the void.[8]

There were seven gods, not six, and therefore, there were seven divine realms. The sixth was the waking world, likely belonging to the War God, and the seventh was the Dream Realm, which spread corruption through the blooming Seeds of Nightmare. Corruption was the result of the Void influencing that which had been created by the gods.[8]

The seventh god had already broken free from his seal but he was still asleep. All of existence was in the throes of his nightmare. The Forgotten God who had succumbed to Corruption. The gods had to prevent him from growing stronger and awakening, erased all mentions of his existence, and forbade the daemons from siring offspring. They destroyed Hope's kingdom when people worshipped her, a cruel punishment considering the daemons' ignorance of their origin.[8]

[...He wasn't the first to lead his army against the gods. However, he was the first to shed their blood, as well as learn the secrets of his own.]

Nether was the first to reveal the lie of the gods and learn the truth of his origin.[8]

Relationship between Gods and Daemons

Note: There is hidden information in this article. Click Show Spoilers to reveal.
In the battles of ancient times, they fought side by side as allies. The gods had never shown any animosity toward daemons and their relationship was somewhat friendly.[10]

While the gods were friendly to daemons and indifferent to mortals building temples to beasts, spirits, and rocks. They would not allow a daemon to be worshiped.[10]

Sunny: "Wait! Don't go! Tell me… tell me why the Lord of Light did this! Why did the gods imprison you?! Why couldn't they just kill you?! Why?!"
Hope: "...Because we are their Flaw."
― Conversation Hope was gone,
Chapter 742 Hope

It was implied in the answer of Hope that the daemons were possibly the personifications of the Flaws that the gods had shed.[11]

Origin of Life

Reveal

The seven gods were born from the Flame of Desire, while the seven daemons were born from the Forgotten God. Humans are described as being born from stray sparks, distinguishing them from the higher beings. All creatures ultimately derive their existence from the Flame of Desire.[12]

Creation of Life

Contrary to popular belief, no being can truly create life, not even the gods. The act commonly referred to as creation is instead a process of reshaping existing sparks of flame. Gods and daemons breathe life into new beings by tearing pieces of their own flame and using them to animate their creations. For example, the Forgotten God used this method to give life to the daemons, and Nether, the Demon of Destiny, applied it to create the Stone Saints by placing sparks of his own flame into them.[12]

Nature of Daemons

Daemons are fundamentally different from mortal life. They are described as never having been truly alive, existing as manifestations of a greater flame. As such, they cannot be destroyed by death or confined by the Shadow Realm. When a daemon is destroyed, the sparks that sustain it return to the Forgotten God, completing the cycle of their existence. This unique nature enables daemons to perform feats beyond the capabilities of mortal or divine beings.[12]

Weakened State of the Gods

The gods' power is finite and diminishes with use. Over time, the gods have grown small and feeble due to repeatedly expending parts of their flame to populate the realms with life. This expenditure of the Flame of Desire is a key factor in the balance, explaining why certain beings, such as Hope, cannot be killed without significant repercussions.[12]

Trivia

  • Everything having to do with the Spell and the Dream Realm had a tendency to be tied to the number seven except the gods, of whom there had been only six.[13]
  • The Spell behaved strangely when speaking about daemons. It never mentions or uses the term as though the word itself was somehow forbidden. The closest the Spell had ever come close to mentioning the word daemon was calling the Prince of the Underworld a prideful demon.[14]
  • Noctis also mentioned that desire is a very powerful thing. It is what the gods were born from, in the endless, ever-changing void of chaos. But there is one force more terrifying than desire and that is fate. Even the gods were afraid of fate.[15]
  • In Chapter 741, Noctis told Sunny to never trust the gods.
  • There were all kinds of cults before like rulers that proclaimed themselves divine, people who built temples to beasts and spirits, and some even worshiped rocks or Corrupted abominations. However, people had never worshiped a daemon before Hope.[10]
  • The sybils served as a kind of oracle that received revelations from the gods. Those revelations stopped after the gods perished.[16]
  • Creating living things was an authority exclusive to the gods which made Nether's feat of making Stone warriors so remarkable.[17]
