Seed of Nightmare is a vile manifestation of the Spell that grew in the Dream Realm and eventually blossomed, opening a Nightmare gate to the real world for the Nightmare Creatures to enter. It is the thing that Awakened was supposed to seek out and destroy by challenging the Nightmare contained within.[1]
Mechanism
A Seed can be challenged before and after it blooms. If the Seed is not found in time, a Gate opens, and challengers can fight their way through and enter the Nightmare directly. The Gate also disrupts the anchors of those near it, so Masters and Saints that enter the Dream Realm will appear in the vicinity of the blooming Seed.[2]
Most of the Seeds are not found in time because the Dream Realm is vast and only partially explored. That is why the Nightmare Creatures are entering the real world so often. Challenging a Seed before it blooms is better.[2]
After the Seed of Nightmare had been destroyed, a Gateway took its place.[3]
Categories
One of the things that differentiated Seeds was their Category:[1]
- Category Two Seed would blossom into a Category Two Gate, and contains a Second Nightmare. If an Awakened challenged it and passed the trial, they would become a Master.
- If a Master challenged a Category Three Seed and survived the Third Nightmare, they would become a Saint.
There are numerous Nightmares but not all Nightmares are equal. The nature of the Nightmare one can challenge determines what knowledge one will receive, and what secret one will be able to glean. The lessons humans can learn from the decrepit ruins in the Dream Realm are not that profound. Most of the knowledge comes from the stories people bring back from their Nightmares. For that reason, powerful Legacy Clans select the Nightmares for their members to challenge very carefully.[1]
First Nightmare Seed
The First Nightmare is similar to the other Nightmares. It is also born from a Seed. The only difference is that the seed does not grow in the Dream Realm. Instead, it develops within a human's soul.[4]
The Seeds of Nightmare were described as the most modest form of Corruption that could bloom in the hearts of Aspirants. Merely forming a soul core was sufficient to destroy these Seeds, and countless Sleepers had accomplished this with the aid of the Spell, while others accomplished it independently by Awakening naturally to remove them. Hundreds of millions of people carried the Seeds of Nightmare in their hearts but did not succumb to Corruption because the power of the Domains they belonged to—the power of their Sovereigns—suppressed the Seeds and prevented them from blossoming. The Path of Ascension was inherently opposed to Corruption, so the higher one climbed along it, the more resistant they became.[5]
Call of Nightmare
- Main article: Call of Nightmare
All Seeds of Nightmare emanated this Call, to which all Awakened were susceptible—the stronger they were, the more maddening the Call became, drawing them to challenge the Seed.[6]
The Call of Nightmare is a familiar feeling in the soul of the Awakened that calls them to enter the Nightmare.[1][7][8] The Nightmare Creatures are also pulled by the Call to the blooming Seed of Nightmare to enter the waking world.[9]

The Seed of the Nightmare Spell is described as fundamentally unlike any other Seed. This particular Seed is singular and that there are no Seeds in existence like this one. It is identified paradoxically as both "the last one" and "the first one", ultimately clarified to be the Seed of the Seventh Nightmare. This Seed is not merely another Nightmare, but the source of all other Seeds and the root of the Nightmare Spell itself.[19]
Trivia
- The Seeds of Nightmares appeared between the start of the Doom War and the present day, where Corruption reclaimed the world.[20] (See History of the World)
- The way to destroy the seed is by challenging the Nightmare contained within.[1]
