True Shadow Creature are independent Shadows described as Shadows that can exist without reliance on their summoner.[1][2]
Sunny's Shadows
- Main article: Sunny/Echoes & Shadows § Shadows
Sunny's Shadows, referred to as "Shadows", are not considered real beings or complete Shadow Creatures. They are intrinsically tied to him, functioning as extensions of his own existence rather than independent entities. While they are not exactly masterless, they are still fundamentally a part of Sunny, meaning they will be destroyed along with him—even more thoroughly than Sunny himself—if he summons them in the Shadow Realm. This is because the Shadow Realm seeks to grant eternal peace to masterless shadows or those without a living connection, which indirectly threatens Sunny as he is comparable to the shadow of a dead god due to lacking a Shadow Bond with a master.
To become real Shadow Creatures, these Shadows must be "completed", achieving a form of independence from Sunny. How the completion occurs is uncertain.[2]
In Chapter 3105, upon the inheritance of Shadow Weave, Sunny sensed the beginning of an understanding that could finally make his Shadows "whole." He recalled Eurys' earlier statement that although his Shadows were powerful, they were incomplete. Shadow Weave appeared to provide the first insight into resolving that incompleteness, though Sunny had yet to fully comprehend the process.
Liberation of the Shadows
Sunny's process of liberating a Shadow began by removing its Shadow Core from his own soul. Using the same motion he used when weaving a soul shard into a Memory, he reached into his soul and grasped the Shadow Core that had served as the Shadow's cradle. He then pulled it out, tearing the Shadow Core from his soul. Through Shadow Weave, Sunny had developed the ability to remove a Shadow Core without destroying it, although it had taken months of torturous experimentation to figure out how to do so. His soul was not damaged terribly in the process due to being enhanced by Soul Weave.[3]
Sunny had previously seen Mordret perform something similar when creating his Reflections or purging cores tainted by Corruption, but had been unable to do it himself before obtaining Shadow Weave. By then, Sunny possessed an instinctual understanding of how to proceed, while the foundation of his being had become more capable and malleable, allowing him to perform the process. However, it had taken him months of torturous experimentation to learn how to remove a Shadow Core from his soul without destroying it. His soul was also not damaged terribly because it had been enhanced by Soul Weave.[3]
Removing the Shadow Core was only half of the process. Sunny then had to embed the Shadow Core into the Shadow's soul, or rather, into the shadow that served the Shadow as one. Drawing on his vast experience as a sorcerer, he carefully embedded the Shadow Core into the Shadow's chest. Once the core entered the dark depths of the Shadow's being, something within the Shadow responded to its presence, causing a wondrous transformation to take place. At the completion of the process, the Spell announced: [You have lost a Shadow.][3]
