“ Ah, yes. She's a real beauty! This noble ship is the last of her kind. An original! All those flying buckets the rest of them use are just crude imitations. ” ― Noctis to Sunny,
Chapter 646 Familiar Sights
Chain Breaker is both the ship depicted on the Noctis Coin and the actual ship that lay broken on Shipwreck Island. It was a strange vessel that moved partially due to sorcery with the sapling of a sacred tree growing around its mast serving as the source of it.[4]
Description
Debut
The ancient vessel had no steering wheel, instead, it relied on two steering oars, which were situated at the very rear of it. There was a runic circle inscribed between the oars.[5]
The flying ship had to be controlled both physically and with soul essence. There were invisible energy pathways spanning the whole length of it, all leading to the roots of the beautiful tree growing around the main mast. It was the tree that produced the tremendous flow of essence required to propel the vessel through the air, and not the kybernetes. However, the pilot still needed to control that flow and serve as its nexus, so only an Awakened rank and above could do it.[5]
Exterior
At the heart of Shipwreck Island, a large wooden ship lay broken on the ground. It must have been beautiful and magnificent once, but now, all that remained of its former glory were the fluid lines of the graceful and narrow hull. The ancient wood somehow remained untouched by the passage of time, but the bow of the ship was completely shattered. There were also large breaches here and there along the length of the wreck, and green vines covering large sections of it. At the tall mast of the ship, a dead, withered tree coiled around it, its naked branches stretching into the sky like bones.[2]
The tree that is supposed to look full of life and in bloom looked very different from how it was depicted on the reverse side of the mysterious coins.[2]
In the second nightmare, the beautiful tree grew around the main mast. The middle of the vessel drowned in the cool shade of its wide branches. The bark of the tree was ivory white, and its leaves were vibrant emerald in color. The difference with how the flying ship had been in the future was that the original tree was much taller, stronger, more robust, and ancient.[6]

Enchantments
The ship's enchantments were powered by a sacred tree from Heart God's grove. A sapling was found to replace the tree, which supposedly died during the ship's crash.[10]
Background
A long time ago, the Sky Below was full of divine flame. Back then, there were fearless daredevils who dove down into the ocean of immolating fire to harvest some of it. This is the last remaining vessel in their fleet, the Fire Hunters. According to Noctis, they were a fun crowd but not very bright.[6]
History
The flying ship had somehow ended up on Ivory Island itself. Cassie studied the flying ship extensively in the Nightmare that she managed to repair its enchantment circuits enough to move directly between Ivory Tower and the Isles.[11]
The ancient ship was named by Sunny as "Chain Breaker", in honor of Noctis. As Sunny's self-proclaimed best friend who aimed to break the will of the gods and free Hope from her chains.[1]
In Chapter 1336, another Chain Breaker was found inside the Tomb of Ariel which was a bit different from what the Fire Keepers repaired. Cassie was able to fully restore the enchantment circuit of the said Chain Breaker[12].
According to Cassie, there are three ways to repair the enchantment of the Chain Breaker: using a key, being a locksmith, and brute force. The key would be the detailed knowledge of the original enchantment of the Chain Breaker. The second way is to be a locksmith who understands the structure of any lock on a deep level. That way, you can pick it up without a key. The third way is brute force. The rock was part of an Unholy Titan and she borrowed its power to compensate for her lack of knowledge.[13]
The sorcerous ink used to connect the runic circuit to the sacred tree was created from the dust of the black stone they got from Aletheia's Tower.[14][12]
Trivia
- The main cargo of the ship is the origin of all the brown vines that had devoured the wreck.[8]
- There are three heavy chests standing in the center of the treasury. All three were open, two stood empty, but the third chest was long and adamantine, its dark wood reinforced by strips of dull metal. It was large enough to fit an adult man.[7]
- It was a flying ship. The ship that was depicted on the miraculous coins was the same as the one that lay broken on Shipwreck Island due to the following reasons:[15]
- The ship on the coin and the actual ship looked alike and the coins had come from its treasury.
- The ship has actually been designed to fly through the skies. Also, there's no other reason for a sailing ship to be in the middle of Chained Isles, which had no actual body of water.
- On the coin, the ancient ship was shown to have a beautiful tree wrapped around its mast. It also belonged to the enigmatic person called Noctis.
- Cassie and the Fire Keepers spent two months searching for a living root of a sapling in Desecrated Grove and they found one underground. The sapling will grow into the wondrous tree that kept the ancient ship afloat in the sky.[15]
- The Fire Keepers had succeeded in repairing the ancient vessel.[3]
- In Chapter 1163, when the flying ship was named, Kai suggested the name "Sky Swimmer" while Effie suggested "Sunfull".
- In Chapter 2850, Nephis had drawn the Chain Breaker into her Soul Sea, storing it there for safety.
- Chain Breaker's state from the Third Nightmare and the long, terrifying battle that had left the same scale of destruction on its ancient hull. It had actually escaped Ariel's Hell.[16]
Terminology
- Kybernetes - a guide who steered the ship as it flew through the air.[5]
