“
Freedom doesn’t come without power, and power doesn’t come cheap. Strive for it. Hunger for it. Make it so you are never betrayed again. So no one dares to. And if they do… crush them like the pathetic ants they are. You will find yourself on a mountain of corpses. Be sure you’re the only one standing on the top.
— The Malefic Viper to Jake Thayne Book 1 Chapter 53
”

The Malefic Viper is one of the twelve Primordials, the gods who ascended in the first era of the multiverse.

The Malefic Viper is a god known more for his deeds than his name. He is a scaled being who has stood at the pinnacle since the beginning, spawning unconfirmed rumors that he may have been the first god. He is the founder and leader of the Order of the Malefic Viper, a once-powerful organization that dominated from the first era to the seventh. Masters of alchemy and combat, the Order was ruthless in its path of domination and was believed to be an unstoppable force that would remain a peak force in the multiverse perennially. This changed during the seventh era when an event redacted by the System took place, invoking the nigh unstoppable wrath of the Viper. The full weight of the Primordial's anger befell the seventh universe, resulting in what is today known as the Great Desolate – a testament to the might of a Primordial when crossed. A once bustling universe brimming with life, all that remains of the seventh universe is a land in which not even the undead can exist, inhabited only by spirits and apparitions of the past. The Viper then went into isolation, his Order left to await his return with anticipation.[1]

During the early days of the integration of the 93rd universe The Malefic Viper unexpectedly exited his seclusion and began rebuilding his own reputation as well as the reputation of his Order. This was due to the influence of Jake Thayne who would go on to become the Chosen of The Malefic Viper.

Appearance

Like all beasts, who gain the Polymorph skill at C-grade, the Viper is capable of changing his appearance. When Jake first met the Viper, the Primordial appeared as a scalekin. The Viper had extremely fine black scales with a slight dark green tinge lining his entire body, eyes that shone dim-green with piercing vertical slits for pupils, and long, unkempt black hair.[2] He wore a tattered black robe with simple, dark green engravings running across it.

Personality

“
He was a god with dozens of stories revolving around vengeance, and while some gods prided themselves on taking the high road and acting superior, the Malefic One happily went as low as he had to if it meant accomplishing his goals.
— Artemis while considering the Malefic Viper in Chapter 1202
”

The Malefic Viper is an extremely ambitious and highly motivated person. He has a strong sense of curiosity and is extraordinarily intelligent. He is clever, cunning, and very good at long-term planning. He is known to be a schemer, exceptionally capable of understanding the motivations of others and playing the long game to achieve his ultimate objectives.

Throughout the series, the Malefic Viper has shown two sides towards others. To those he values, Villy is an immensely valuable ally and a great friend. In contrast to his multiversal reputation, he loves pranks, bets, and jokes. With Jake, Villy is always ready to toss in a funny comment and toss back a beer. With Duskleaf and Snappy, he's playful and teasing, continually poking fun of their serious and dour demeanors. With Nature's Attendant, he is warm and respectful.

For those who land on the Viper's bad side? He is considered vengeance personified, willing to wipe out a galaxy to destroy a handful of people who have wronged him. Vilastromoz has little patience and even less empathy for those that he considers weak or unmotivated. He is admittedly amoral at best, and has no issues with being considered evil or a villain. He believes that might makes right and that the goal should be to grow strong enough to do whatever the hell you want. If you aren't strong enough to defend yourself, then you got what you deserved.

Story

Pre-Integration

The Malefic Viper was born a mundane snake, prior to the integration of the first universe. He lived in an area that the rest of his planet eventually called "The Desolates" for its low mana concentration and the later appearance of desolate affinity. As a low-grade snake, he ate a diet consisting largely of poisonous mushrooms with necrotic properties. The Viper eventually learned to produce similar properties in his own venom and his Path focused on poisons.

D-grade

At D-grade, the Viper evolved into a winged serpent with the ability to spit poison mist. He also seemed to have a small number of low-grade human worshippers in the Desolates during this time.

C-grade

At C-grade, the Viper evolved into a wyvern and decided to leave the area in which he was born. Upon exiting his home region, he discovered a number of powerful human settlements. During this time, he became known as the Wyvern of the Desolates.

The Viper spent a number of years on his original world, hunting humans, looting cities for treasures, learning to take human form, and learning alchemy. He perfected his ability to deceive and poison humans that he otherwise wouldn't have been able to kill at the time.

The First Sage

The Malefic Viper had a master in C-grade who was eventually monikered "The First Sage". This master was critical to the Viper's journey with Vilastromoz even going as far as saying "I actually think meeting him was one of the reasons I even managed to become a god." The sage was immensely talented, "a jack of all trades, master of all," according to the Viper.

Additionally, The First Sage had a bloodline called the "Bloodline of the Immortal Mind" which gave only one thing: Perfect Memory. Vilastromoz later inherited this bloodline by request as a reward in a system event. Despite being immensely talented, The First Sage ultimately died in C-grade, not due to a lack of ability, but the lack of will, exacerbated by brutal mental health issues. The First Sage eventually asked Vilastromoz to kill him so his records could live on through his disciple. The Viper fulfilled this request with great reluctance.

B-grade

At this point, Vilastromoz destroyed his whole world, leaving him stranded alone on the planet as a peak C-grade. He developed an intense hatred of his home world and the system. This hostility resulted in levels and an evolution to a Calamitous Banespike Dragon at B-grade, after which the Viper was finally capable of leaving his world and seeking destruction of other worlds.

S-grade

During an S-grade system event, The Malefic Viper met Valdemar for the first time. The two clashed over a treasure and the Viper lost, even though Valdemar was on a lower level. This would be their first clash of many.

5th era

The Viper was active during the 5th era. He implies to Jake that he may have been involved in "ruining" a lesser universe during the fifth era[3].

It was also during this time that he met the then-S grade Sanguine, who came the Malefic Order in order to seek training and mentorship on his quest to create a new race. The Viper described Sanguine as "the most talented alchemist [he'd] ever met since Duskleaf"[4]. After reaching godhood, Sanguine succeeded in creating the Vampires. However, he was eventually killed by some of the larger factions of the multiverse who were angered by his creation of a transcendence that would theoretically allow the Vampires to rival the Risen and the Holy Church as a path to immortality. The Viper declined to help Sanguine, believing it was Sanguine's battle and that he'd known the risks of creating a race that rivaled two Primordial factions. The Viper did, however provide refuge for vampires that survived the subsequent purge. To this day, most vampires have loyalty to the Malefic Order in gratitude to the Viper for taking them in, as well as for the role he played in creating their race.

7th era

In the seventh era, the Viper lost his family in an undisclosed event. Enraged, he laid waste to the pantheon responsible, resulting in 10% of the seventh universe being a desolate area where nothing can live. The Viper's rampage required the intervention of 8 primordials to stop him. The fight resulted in all the primordials involved retreating to their divine realms for over 10,000 years to recover. The Viper chose to seclude himself in his divine realm for more than 85 eras. Without their primordial protector, the Order of the Malefic Viper slowly lost its influence.

Integration of the 93rd universe

During the tutorials of the 93rd universe, Jake Thayne unintentionally entered the Viper's divine realm through a legacy challenge dungeon created by the Viper back in the first era. The two talk and Jake encouraged the Viper to not give up on life. This unassuming encouragement lead the Viper to grant Jake a True Blessing. Shortly after Jake returned to the tutorial, the Viper exited his divine realm.

Upon his return, the Viper warned all factions to evacuate their holdings on Primordial-4, the location of the main hall of the Order of the Malefic Viper. Most complied, but notably the Brimstone Hegemon refused, believing that the Viper was not strong enough to enforce his will after eras of seclusion. To prove his capability, the Viper entered the Brimstone Hegemon's divine realm and killed the stubborn god, demonstrating to the multiverse that the primordial was still extremely powerful. In the immediate aftermath of the killing, he was confronted by Yip of Yore. They had a brief scuffle, ended by the two agreeing to have their next battle by proxy through their respective chosen.

Equipment

The Malefic Viper ascended from a scalekin, part of the monster races who receive no stat boosts from equipment. However, he does use a staff, created with help from the Starseizing Titan. The staff is described as an ancient-looking wooden staff with metal bindings covering the body. The staff's head is a dark green orb with a faint glow.[5] It's a Soulbound weapon made from roots gifted by Yggdrasil, metals taken from forbidden realms, and an orb from a Godking-level elemental god the Viper corrupted using his malefic affinity eras ago.[6]

Divine Realm

The Malefic Viper's divine realm is one of desolation. Jake described it as extremely dark, a vast plane of nothingness. The terrain appears to be smooth black rocks, similar to granite. The environment is full of an extremely toxic light mist.[7] Normally, no one below S-grade can surive inside the Viper's realm.[8]

Inside the realm, the Viper stays in a decrepit, old cave. However, his realm also contains a valley, one that has no desolation but rather is brimming with life, including small animals, shrubbery, and calm winds. In the center of this valley, are two obelisks. One obelisk has countless runes of unimaginable power and information, covering every speck of its surface. The other obelisk holds only a single rune that holds no power. The nearly blank obelisk holds a single world: Hope.[8] It is implied later that these two obelisks may mark the current resting place of the Viper's wife and child.

Name Origins

This section is for names that the Viper himself repeatedly uses or acknowledges. See the character box for low-frequency aliases that other characters may use to refer to the Viper.

  • Vilastromoz

The suffix -stromoz in any name means that Viper became a true dragon at one point. It is known that his B-grade evolution into a Calamitous Banespike Dragon is to be considered his True Dragon race.

  • Vilas

The Viper's name before he evolved to become a True Dragon. This name is still used by some, such as Nature's Attendant and the Wyrmgod, and usually indicates that the user has a particularly close relationship with the Viper. This is also the name used in chapters containing the Viper's inner monologue.

  • Villy - Jake-Given Name

"While I have been called Vilas before… that one is a first. I am pretty sure I know of at least a handful of religious organizations who would have you lynched for such blasphemy. " - Villy

  • The Malefic Viper

Vilastromoz's multiversal title and the one usually used for referring to him in conversation.

  • The Malefic One

An honorific used to show respect to the Viper's status. Almost always used when subordinates speak directly to the Viper: "This one greets the Malefic One."
