Overview

Weaver's Mask is the memory Sunny received from a corpse under the Ruined Cathedral.[1][2]

Appearance

A mask of black lacquered wood carved to resemble the face of a ferocious demon. Its teeth bared with four fangs protruding from its mouth. There were three twisted horns rising from it like a crown. Inside the black chasm of its eyes was nothing but pure darkness.[2][3]

[Where is my eye?]

In Chapter 2594, Sunny described [Where is my eye?] as an extreme form of divination, similar to Cassie's Dormant Ability, allowing him to touch the tapestry of fate and catch glimpses of its meaning.

Control

In Chapter 2591, Sunny endured the chaotic sight of fate by narrowing his perception rather than trying to comprehend its entirety. Drawing on his past training of expanding his awareness to multiple perspective to expand the scope of his mind, which he achieved latter thanks to Mind Weave, he reversed the process to narrow down the scope of his mind.[4]

His perception of fate shifted as though he had developed tunnel vision. The breadth of his awareness was vast at first but gradually narrowed. Through effort, he was able to reduce and eventually limit the scope of his vision, focusing only on a smaller fraction of the Strings of Fate rather than the overwhelming entirety of the tapestry.[4]

Through this process, Sunny gained partial control over the [Where is my eye?] enchantment. Whereas previously the enchantment had forced knowledge of fate upon him, he was now able to perceive the Strings without being overwhelmed, as though separated by a barrier that could be opened at will.[4]

Originally, activating it was lethally dangerous because his mortal mind was not meant to behold the endlessness of fate, and gazing upon it could utterly obliterate him. After becoming Supreme, his consciousness became vast and potent enough to survive glimpsing fate, though he still could not perceive its infinite entirety and had to limit the scope of his perception.[5]

By touching the Strings of Fate, absorbing the mysteries contained within them, allows him to witness events from the ancient past, learn secrets of the present, and glimpse hints of futures that had been meant to come but never arrived. However, he recognized that knowledge was a sword that cut both ways. Like Cassie and Mordret, Sunny risked being destroyed by truths he was not powerful enough to endure. Since there was no telling what he might discover within the endless tapestry of fate, using the ability remained inherently dangerous.[5]

The ability also places a heavy strain on Sunny's essence because maintaining the active enchantment of Weaver's Mask consumes his strength. Even if he finds the direction he seeks, he is left weakened afterward.[5]

Background

Ceremonial Garb

The Mask of Weaver is part of the ceremonial garb worn by priests and priestesses of the Nightmare Spell to escape that gaze of pursuers and follow the footsteps of the Demon of Fate. The more accomplished a priest was, the higher rank Memory they would be bestowed.[6]

  • The Sacred Memory is a lesser facsimile of the true Mask of Weaver. It only possesses two enchantments.[6]
  • Divine Memories of the Mask of Weaver were only two, entrusted to the High Priest and High Priestess of the Nightmare Spell. Only the two holy Masks had a third enchantment ([Where is my eye?]), which very few ever learned about.[6]

History

Origin

Summary

A long time ago, the Vile Thieving Bird stole one of Weaver's eyes, and to replace it, Weaver wove the enchantment [Where is my eye?] into their mask, as well as two Memory replicas that were given to the High Priests of the Nightmare Spell. The original mask perished with the Demon of Fate, but one of the Memories survived and was later discovered by Sunny in the ruined cathedral of the Dark City, granting him the ability to glimpse the tapestry of fate. However, mortals were not meant to see fate — even oracles of the nameless realm from which the Nine hailed from lost their sight after glimpsing it.[7]

Discovery

Summary

In the ruined cathedral of Dark City was a hidden passage leading to a large chamber with a door forged from black steel, illuminated by two burning torches. The torches' light was pale and ghostly with no heat. The shadows cast by the ghostly flames were absolutely still as though the light of the torches had trapped and paralyzed them. Sunny went to open the door without his shadow using the mysterious key he got before.[1]

Behind the door was a small room with a corpse chained to the floor inside a circle wearing a dark mantle and a strange mask covering its face.[1] Near the prisoner were the same runes the Spell used to describe the mysterious Unknown. Only the intensity of the terrible effect they had on the mind of anyone who saw them was much stronger. The last thing the prisoner wrote before succumbing to death, was a short prayer: "Hail Weaver, Demon of Fate, Firstborn of the -unknown-".[8]

Chained Isles

Summary

In Chapter 429, Sunny had used the enchantment of Weaver's Mask to see the Strings of Fate only once to save himself from being destroyed by the Crushing together with Twisted Rock.

Among those threads, two shone the brightest: one was made out of pure white flame stretching far away into the distance leading towards the Hollow Mountains and the other was made out of golden light that led down into the boundless darkness of the Sky Below.[9]

Just for a single moment of activating the active enchantment, Sunny's reserve of shadow essence was sucked dry. This enchantment not only allowed him to see the tapestry of Fate but also forced the understanding of it onto him. The knowledge of everything, everywhere, all at once.[9]

After Sunny used the active enchantment, the name [Where is my eye?] was revealed after.[10]

Trivia

  • Sunny used the mask for his Mongrel persona.[11]
  • Sunny knew Weaver's Mask's origin as a replica of the Demon of Fate's mask, granted to High Priests of the Nightmare Spell in the distant past. It was created by Weaver's hand, making it a true relic left by the nebulous daemon, just like the Nightmare Spell itself.[12]
  • Sunny nearly died the first time he activated the enchantment as an Awakened, surviving only because the Divine Memory exhausted itself, and the agony he endured became the most painful experience of his life.[9][7]
  • As an Ascended, he used the ability once more in Antarctica, stunning the Terror of LO49, Dusk, long enough to kill her.[13][7]
  • Sunny activated the enchantment to gather intelligence where Weaver's lineage is in the Night Garden.[14][7]
As a Supreme Titan with Mind Weave when Sunny activated the enchantment what he saw was not the infinite, orderly tapestry of fate he remembered. Instead, the threads were cut, tangled, and ravaged, with the past remaining intact but the present in shambles — and the future entirely gone. The fate itself, thought to be immutable, had been destroyed. The cause was clear to him: his own defiance, and the rebellion he and Cassie had committed against destiny, had torn the tapestry apart and erased the future.[7]
  • In Chapter 2616, Sunny reluctantly donned Weaver's Mask to uncover the hidden path to Eternal City.
When Sunny was pulled out of his trance after Jet struck him to break using [Where is my eye?]. He discovered that smoke had been rising from beneath his mask, the area around his eyes was burned, and his sight was temporarily lost, leaving him blind. Jet described his appearance as "mostly black, with glowing orange cracks" and "embers in your eyes". Thanks to his regenerative abilities — and Jet's timely intervention — the damage was mild and would heal in a few days.[15]
  • In Chapter 3080, Sunny had used [Where is my eye?] in the Underworld to search the Strings of Fate for the path to Shadow Weave, enduring the immense strain and danger of glimpsing forbidden truths. After nearly being corrupted by a vision from one of the threads, he had recovered with Nephis' help and finally determined that they needed to travel to the heart of the Underworld.
