Cause of Death
The Cursed Wanderer abandoned his wraith army to pursue the Flesh of Kanakht, but his viridian cutlass failed and shattered mid-flight, marking the destruction of the Soul of Kanakht. Immediately after, Jet emerged in an empowered wraith form wielding a fearsome scythe and overwhelmed him. Dhe delivered a decisive blow, the scythe passing through him from shoulder to hip, ultimately destroying the Cursed Wanderer in the heart of the Eternal City.[6]

The Cursed Wanderer was the name ancient people gave to the Dutchman—a mortal captain who was cursed to wander the sea forever after swearing to find the Eternal City and profess his undying love to the Demon of Repose.[2]

Description

The captain of the Dutchman, also known as the Cursed Wanderer, was described as a ghostly figure who led the spectral ship and its wraith crew. Up close, he appeared quite like a man—well, a ghost of a man, at least. He wore the tattered remnants of a lavish robe over spectral chainmail, with long hair swept back and tied into a careless knot, exposing a narrow forehead. His skin was bronze in tone, but ethereal and translucent, suffused with a pale glow. Despite his humanoid appearance, no one could mistake him for a true human because of the monstrous madness burning in the depths of his cold, inhuman eyes.[5]

Etymology

The Cursed Wanderer was the name ancient people gave to the Dutchman—a mortal captain who was cursed to wander the sea forever after swearing to find the Eternal City and profess his undying love to the Demon of Repose; he sailed the Twilight Sea until he grew weak and old, sought the mythical (and cursed) Well of Souls to buy more time, and (according to legend) became bound to it so that the Well became a ship and the captain became its helmsman, never reaching the Eternal City and doomed to wander the Stormsea for thousands of years; the Dutchman was described as a kind of well of souls that consumes souls and enslaves them, sends those souls out as wraiths to slaughter the living, and cannot be permanently destroyed because killing the wraiths or destroying the smaller ships only returned them to the Dutchman, while the captain (possibly a captured soul) was depicted as the evil will behind the curse and an ill omen whose appearance in the mist foretold death.[2]

Ability

Reveal

Although not considered particularly powerful by classification—being a Corrupted Devil, as Cassie explained—the captain had conquered and subjugated the Great Tyrant known as the Soul of Kanakht and stolen its power. This created an unnatural hierarchy where a minion of a powerful Tyrant had come to rule his master. His ghostly cutlass, imbued with the might of the Soul of Kanakht, glowed with a ghostly chill, serving as both weapon and manifestation of the conquered Great One's power.[5]

In combat, the captain exuded a terrifying wrongness, as if the world itself resisted his opponent and aided him. The space around him seemed subtly twisted, and his presence exerted an overwhelming pressure akin to that of a Sovereign's Will—a mysterious, palpable force of higher beings.[5]

Weapon

Reveal

The Soul of Kanakht had been turned into a weapon, specifically a cutlass, which the Cursed Wanderer wielded in battle. The cutlass carried an ethereal, ghostly chill, glowing like an ethereal beacon amid the mist, and it was powerful enough to cleave through shades effortlessly, severing their shadowy forms as if meeting no resistance.[5]

Despite this, the Soul of Kanakht was not indestructible. When the weapon clashed with Jet's Mist Blade, a crack appeared on its surface, shocking the Cursed Wanderer and breaking his composure. This reaction emphasized the Soul of Kanakht's true nature — it was not just a weapon, but an intangible, soul-based entity, making it vulnerable to Jet's Aspect as the Soul Reaper, which allowed her to deliver tangible attacks to intangible souls.[5]

Background

Reveal

Once a mortal man, he fused with the Soul of Kanakht, transforming into a corrupted wraith and captain of the ghostly vessel. His actions may have stemmed from a need for power, as the Nine were meant to help the daemons win the Doom War and thus needed to ascend to great might. Unlike Orphne—who achieved her power through sheer determination—others among the Nine sought shortcuts, and the captain's fusion with the soul of a Supreme cursed to immortality by the Shadow God (Kanakht) was one such path.[4]

The fusion allowed both the captain and the Dutchman to survive the Doom War, long after gods and daemons perished, though at a terrible cost: both fell into deep corruption. The captain's obsession with the Eternal City persisted through the ages, likely because the Flesh of Kanakht resided there. Having already subjugated the Soul of Kanakht, he sought to claim more power—perhaps by obtaining the Flesh and even the Heart of Kanakht, which was trapped within Jet's Mist Blade.[4]

Trivia

  • One of the Nine was the bronze-skinned sea captain who became the helmsman of the cursed ship known as the Dutchman.[4]
  • His Will distorted Jet's movements and diminished her attacks, making the battle feel suffocating.[5]
    • Despite this overwhelming power, the captain's composure faltered when his blade—the Soul of Kanakht itself—was struck by Jet's Mist Blade and cracked. The moment revealed confusion and shock behind his mask of indifferent malice, breaking his air of invincibility and exposing the limits of the corrupted dominance he wielded over the ancient Soul of Kanakht.[5]
  • It had had spent thousands of years gathering his forces.[7]
