Caleb Thayne

Caleb is a reasonable authority figure who is easily able to manage difficult personalities. He theorizes that this stems from counterbalancing Jake who isn't good with authority, requiring Caleb constant run interference to keep Jake from running afoul of teachers.

Caleb is a family man, but is also nurturing in general, particularly towards children. A teacher pre-system, he helped children reunite with their parents during the Tutorials or simply took responsibility for them. He was very caring to the point that Matteo believed Caleb would be great change in the new world.

Caleb is able to remain calm in highly stressful situations, separating his personal feelings from his professional objectives. He can quickly assess situations and provide a plan of action that is less damaging to all parties. Although such a morally grounded person seems an odd pick to lead an assassin syndicate, Caleb notes that part of the reason he was picked is his ability not to lose himself to the thrill.

As a very young child, Caleb would get scared and start crying if Jake got too close while emotional. This behavior faded as Jake got older and gained better control of his emotions and behaviors.^[1] Post-System integration, Jake theorizes that it may have been Caleb reacting fearfully to Jake's inherent Bloodline abilities which Jake eventually unintentionally suppressed and Caleb naturally acclimated to. This lifelong aura resistance training is perhaps the reason he is given the Legacy of Tenlucis which requires great mental resilience to avoid the wielder going insane.

As a young man, Caleb fell in love with their next door neighbour Maja. With Jake's encouragement, Caleb proposed to Maja and the two married. Maja was pregnant with their first child at the time of the system integration.

Pre-system, Caleb worked as an elementary school teacher in his hometown and lived nearby to his parents.

As a result of his tutorial performance, Caleb is blessed by Umbra, the holder of the Legacy of Tenlucis, and a supremely talented caster.  Umbra directed Caleb to the Legacy of Tenlucis after Caleb was able to stand tall in front of her, having already developed aura resistance because of lifelong exposure to Jake.

Caleb is the Judge of the Court of Shadows, defacto leader of the court on Earth. Caleb and the Court of Shadows were the 6th to claim a pylon on earth. Caleb and his family live in Skyggen, including Robert and Debra, with intense security such as defensive artifacts with auto-deploying barriers and shields^[2] to make sure no member of the family is targeted because of their connection to Jake or Caleb.

Caleb is the holder of the Legacy of Tenlucis, a mercurial and relentless legacy. Ever ambitious, Tenlucis created a special affinity and concept he called the Dark Heavens, allowing him to become one of the most powerful gods of his time, second to only Umbra herself. Had he survived, he may have become her true equal, but he fell before he could fully realize his Path.^[3]

The Dark Heavens, the driving force of the legacy, constantly tempers the user’s magic, in an eternal phase of growth. Relying on the concepts of the dark affinity, the Dark Heavens constantly consume Caleb’s Records and forcefully assimilate them. This creates constant improvement of the Legacy skill, but also pressures Caleb, driving him to accumulate more and more Records, or the Dark Heavens will begin to consume Caleb's records, resulting in the loss of skills, stats, and, ultimately, his very existence, forcing his entire being to become one with the Dark Heavens.

The Legacy is a reckless and dangerous Path, constantly forcing Caleb forward, but Caleb chose it for a reason, wanting an unending motivation that drives him to keep up with the other supreme geniuses of his universe, including his brother. As long as Caleb earns enough Records to evolve when the time comes, all is well. However, the real problem comes from the overbearing nature of the Dark Heavens. Designed to constantly pressure its user, the Dark Heavens are effectively a living entity within Caleb’s Soulspace, a presence that continually grows. Unless Caleb can withstand the pressure of the presence, everything will crumble.

Except, Caleb has an inexplicable level of aura resistance, the kind that lets him stand tall in front of a god like Umbra. The kind of aura resistance that won't submit to any presence.
