Article contents
Umbra is the goddess of darkness and shadows and the founder and supreme leader of the Court of Shadows. She was the first person to become a god of the 2nd universe[1] and stands at the pinnacle of the multiverse with power comparable to Primordials-level. The tenet of Umbra and the Court of Shadows is that only the strongest may rule.
She was the Patron of the Caleb Thayne's tutorial (featured in the 4th intermission). She granted Caleb her Blessing and the Legacy of Tenlucis.
In the Myriad Paths event, Umbra was Jake's patron god. Throughout the series, she shows a keen interest in him, going as far as blessing his brother, Caleb, and providing the strongest protections possible for the Thayne family in Skyggen.
Court of Shadows
A mercenary order of assassins that spans the whole of the multiverse, the Court does not dominate territories but instead prefers to remain hidden in the shadows. A neutral faction, the Court accepts contracts from other factions, profiting off the many wars and conflicts going on throughout the multiverse.
The Court is divided into different cells known as courts with each court overseen by a Judge who is responsible for guiding their court, including choosing which contracts to take on. Having strong morals is considered a good trait for the Judge to have to avoid wholesale slaughter that might cause other factions to turn on the Court.
Usually the position of Judge is held by an S-Grade powerhouse but in newly initiated universes lower grade beings will take up the position. Such is the case with the integration of the 93rd Universe with Caleb Thayne serving as the Judge on Earth.

Appearance in Nevermore
Umbra, under the name Mistress of Shadows, is one of the seven Champions Jake faced in the Coliseum of Mortals during his C-grade trip to Nevermore. When Jake signs up to fight her, she schedules the fight for 18 days later, a day that would have a crescent moon[2], at the latest time possible, creating optimal conditions for shadows. In the arena, Umbra wore a hooded cloak and what Jake believed to be light, leather armor.
Prior to the fight, Umbra admits that based on her observations of Jake's previous matches, she doesn't believe that she can defeat him.[3]

Trivia
- Umbra was the first god, outside of Karroch, the tutorial designer, to truly take note of Jake. Villy believes that she used an item Jake received early in the tutorial to scout him and wanted to recruit him, but Jake stumbled upon the Challenge Dungeon of the Malefic Viper before she could make her move. It is the Viper's the opinion that if not for the Challenge Dungeon, Jake would likely be Umbra's Chosen rather than the Viper's.[3]
- Villy believes that Umbra has taken significant steps to maintain a good relationship with Jake because of the danger he poses, as "a Jake at her power level would be devastating, as he effectively hard countered her." But rather than wanting to kill Jake, she likely views him as an opportunity, someone who can force her to improve and maybe even give her a pathway to a transcendent skill that would allow her to hide from a bloodline.[3]
- According to the Wyrmgod, Umbra requested and paid for the recording of her fight against Jake before he'd even set foot in Nevermore.
- In the Myriad Paths event, it is revealed that a Jake who is focused solely on the thrill of killing willingly joined the Court of Shadows.
