...The Court of Shadows. Assassins for the most part, and feared by mortals and gods alike. If you want someone dead, are filthy rich, and got enough leeway, they are the ones you go to, whether the target is god or mortal."

—The Malefic Viper, to Jake Thayne

The Court of Shadows is a faction that specializes in paid assassinations. The assassins follow Umbra and primarily use the dark affinity. This organization is considered top tier in the multiverse. On Earth this group is led by Caleb Thayne, and is based in the two cities of Skyggen.

Role in the Multiverse

Naturally, the Court of Shadows is the go to organization for the assassination of hard to kill targets. Additionally, the Court is one of the premiere information brokers in the multiverse. They attempt to create dossiers on any power players, including gathering recordings of fights they're involved in.[1] In contrast to expectations, the Court also does mercenary work, hiring out to help clear monster-infested areas, defend areas, and even search and rescue missions.[2]

Judges

Judges are the ultimate authority for day-to-day operations in their sphere of operation. They are to evaluate the types of jobs being taken and to ensure that a balance is maintained. According to Caleb, the Court focuses on walking the line between their illegal activities and being too useful to get rid of.

Caleb is the Judge for Earth.

Contracts

Contracts taken out with the Court of Shadows have restrictions: [3]

  • The Court does not take out World Leaders of the planets they are stationed on
  • Contracts only last for a set amount of time. During that time, the Court will do its best to take out the target, but if the target survives, they have proven themselves worthy of survival. The payment for the contract will be returned, minus expenses
  • Assassins for the Court don't punch down unless they are attacked first. So, an S-grade will not be sent after an A-grade and will not attack an A-grade unless the A-grade attacks first

Notable Contracts

  • Arthur hires the Court of Assassins to kill City Leaders so they can be replaced by United City members during Ell'Hakan's invasion of Earth. Notably, he purchases the contracts from a Judge outside of the 93rd Universe, knowing that Caleb might resist working against his own brother.
  • While Jake is visiting the Pantheon of Life, he is confronted by the Darkwood Chimera who informs him that it has been contracted to kill Jake. Successful completion of the contract would elevate the Chimera to full member status in the Court.[3]

Trivia

  • According to Caleb, the Holy Church is the Court of Shadows' biggest client.[2]
  • During the conflict between Ell'Hakan and Jake, both Ell'Hakan and King Iludar attempted to hire the Court, but Umbra personally banned getting involved in the conflict.[2]
  • The Court keeps profiles on prominent figures which includes the estimated probability of any of their members completing a successful assassination. Caleb informs Jake that the estimated probability of successfully assassinating Jake is far too low to make taking a contract worthwhile, but the probability is notably not zero. He also notes that the success estimate for Ell'Hakan was significantly higher than for Jake.[2]
