The World Tree was the avatar of Heart God, a colossal and sacred tree that served as a pillar supporting both heaven and earth. It was considered immutable and stable in its towering glory within the Heart Realm. Its vast branches were like a world of their own, home to human cities where people had developed sophisticated tools and an elaborate culture, marking the Age of Heroes.[1]
Description
Its branches were like a world in and of itself, with human cities built on their weathered surface. Human cities were built upon their weathered surfaces, where people advanced beyond primitive tools to develop sophisticated technology and elaborate culture. This era was known as the Age of Heroes, when mortal champions struggled against Corrupted Creatures for dominance in the mortal realms.[1]
The tree bore golden fruits, produced golden sap, and was adorned with eternal leaves.[1]
Ariel's Game
Inside Ariel's Game, the tree was described as a colossal and majestic presence with dark bark and bare branches shrouded in snow. Its branches resemble a frozen nebula, giving it a surreal, cosmic appearance. The tree towers above the sea of clouds, standing much higher than the surrounding mountains, and appears to serve as a kind of axis of the world due to its immense scale and central placement. Although Sunny cannot see its roots, he estimates that it is at least ten times taller than the Soul Devourer at its peak. Despite its immense size, it is noted to be infinitely smaller than another unimaginable tree, the one whose stump lies at the heart of the Burned Forest.[2]
This tree can be perceived as a place as it towered higher than the great peaks of Ariel's Game, which were taller than any mountain on Earth. Its branches were kilometers long and wide enough for people to walk on. It forms a complex three-dimensional labyrinth. The tree was recently covered in snow, which melted into flowing water cascading down the branches. The tree's branches show no signs of leaves or fruit and appear broken, frail, and diseased, suggesting it is dead.[3]
Nature
The World Tree was described as the unfathomably large stump at the center of the Burned Forest, which had once been the Sacred Forest. It was the avatar of Heart God, the deity of souls, emotions, memory, growth, and hunger. The World Tree shared similarities with the Soul Devourer, another sacred tree, as both attracted beings with the sweet scent of their fruit and bound those who came to them. Many beings that the World Tree attracted remained in the Heart Realm forever, helping it grow and enabling its offspring to form the Sacred Forest. The visions Sunny saw revealed a duality in the World Tree's nature, making it unclear whether the avatar of Heart God was benevolent and nurturing or insidious and harrowing. The World Tree and the Sacred Forest eventually reached a state of balance after enduring a long and dreadful ice age with the help of the Demon of Repose, but in the end, they were consumed by fire and burned.[4]
Background
Sickness
Within the Heart Realm, free from Corruption, the World Tree unexpectedly began to fall sick. A virulent rot spread across its trunk and branches, darkening its bark and corrupting its golden sap into torrents of abhorrent black pus. Its golden fruits were devoured by gargantuan maggots, unleashing horrors that human champions fought to resist. Eternal leaves withered and fell, and the disease consumed the tree from within, threatening its roots. The World Tree, a pillar of existence itself, slowly crumbled, revealing that even the avatars of gods were vulnerable.[1]
Nature of the Disease
The sickness appeared like Corruption but was, in truth, a living being — an Unholy Terror, a malevolent remnant of the Age of Chaos or a curse left by a slain Void Creature. Some Chaos Creatures had escaped the seal of the Void, and such remnants battled the gods and daemons in primordial times. This Unholy Terror proved strong enough to nearly destroy the World Tree.[1]
Intervention of the Demon of Repose
However, in answer to Heart God's call, the Demon of Repose intervened. Rather than directly fighting the curse, she forced the tree into a state of endless rejuvenation, allowing it to consume the disease through constant cycles of rotting, dying, and being reborn. Diseased bark, leaves, and branches fell away and were replaced by new growth, until the Unholy Terror was no more and the World Tree regained its vitality.[1]
Yet, this salvation came at a terrible cost. The cities within its branches were decimated, destroyed by the endless collapse and regrowth, leaving ruins overgrown with bark and leaves. What saved the World Tree became a calamity for those who lived in its shade, a disaster as unstoppable and merciless as the daemon who caused it. Once the curse was purged, the Demon of Repose departed but took her payment — a young branch of the World Tree. From it, she fashioned the Night Garden, a colossal living ship the size of a city, filled with palaces, pagodas, groves, streams, and lakes, which became her home.[1]
Trivia
- Though the World Tree was eventually destroyed and the Demon of Repose herself perished, the Night Garden endured — the last living sapling of a once great forest.[1]
