This version of Mordret is not entirely sane but less twisted than other version Sunny has known and has lived in Mirage City for about two decades.[1]
Personality
He is described as more benign, even a "nice guy" and "innocent bystander".[1]
In Chapter 2519, Other Mordret upheld his pretense of ignorance by treating Morgan's powers and revelations as delusions or tricks, smiling pleasantly and feigning confusion. However, when Morgan put her life at risk by pressing her Flaw against her own neck, his instinctive reaction to stop her betrayed his knowledge that her powers were real exposing the truth he had been trying to deny.[4]
Other Mordret maintained a façade of ignorance by acting quiet, tentative, and troubled, never asking questions, denying knowledge of outside events, and presenting himself as sheltered within the Palace of Imagination—only breaking that pretense when pressed, revealing the truth about his fractured existence.[5]
Mordret's Flaw
The other Mordret explained that his Flaw was that he and his other self were a shattered being, two parts of the same whole. Both were independent beings, yet it was in their nature to be pulled together in an attempt to become whole once more. He clarified that they were not truly separate individuals, but rather neither of them was a real person and that they were just parts of a person, both missing the other half. They shared not only the same Flaw, but also the same Aspect, as well as a kind of connection that bound them. This divided existence created an imbalance, where his existence weakened his other self, while his other self existence propelled him toward greater power, due to the difference in their rank.[6]
Mordret was split apart when he conquered the First Nightmare, with different versions of him inheriting different parts of his being. Only one version inherited his death, which was hidden somewhere else. Morgan revealed that she knew about her brother's Flaw and that Ki Song had discovered where it was hidden, but she was unaware of much about the Great Mirror or what lay beyond it.[7]
Morgan also mentioned how she had to kill her own reflection before awakening, which weakened the Great Mirror's hold on her; she suspected her brother shared a similar experience. Despite attempts to kill the other Mordret, he remained alive because he was the axis of Mirage City, which was created by the Castellan to suit that Mordret's fantasies. The other Mordret had to remain alive for the stability of the realm, as removing him would leave uncertainty over whose imagination would shape the world.[8]/span>
Origin
According to him, when the original Mordret was twelve and faced his First Nightmare, he gained his Aspect and his Flaw, which shattered him into seven pieces. Each shard inherited certain aspects of the original Mordret, but none were whole, and all were incomplete — missing parts they remembered but no longer possessed or were capable of. Instead of learning to live together and complement one another, one of the shards — the strongest, best suited to be a protector, but lacking compassion — chose to make himself whole by killing the others. That shard slew five of their number and absorbed them, regaining many of the original Mordret's parts and coming close to becoming a complete person again. Other Mordret survived only because he had inherited their death; if he died, all of them would die. He was the weakest and most vulnerable, lacking many things that made him harmless, but this very inheritance of death spared him. He further revealed that his surviving counterpart, though nearly whole, still lacked a crucial part — the ability to feel regret. This absence defined him, shaping what he had become. Still, despite being unable to regret, Mordret longed for home and belonging, and so, before coming to Bastion, he hid the Other Mordret beneath the city in a place where no one would ever find him.[9]
Trivia
- He is the axis and foundational figure of Mirage City, which the Castellan created to fit Mordret's fantasies. Removing him risks destabilizing Mirage City, as it depends on his imagination as its foundation. The Castellan, a chief reflection and custodian of the Great Mirror, has gone rogue and taken control of the Palace of Imagination, so Mordret must stay alive until the Castellan is dealt with.[1]
- Mordret is a carrier of the Nightmare Spell who Awakened in the conventional way by conquering the First Nightmare and anchoring his soul to the Dream Realm through a Citadel.[6]
- He explained that he was not simply inside a mirror, but rather under house arrest at the very heart of his brother's personal Mirror Realm — within his soul. The mirrors Rain sees are merely windows he can use to look at the outside world. He also mentioned that he had previously spent a long time trapped in a different mirror.[6]
- He admitted to have used a backdoor to become a Master, and then to become Transcendent. His unique condition allowed him to achieve natural Ascension and Transcendence as if the world itself was on his side. Despite this advantage, he claimed personal contribution that he did invent the essence technique to become a Master himself, as well as solving the mystery of how to become Transcendent. He also note that his other half had already walked the Path of Ascension in his stead, meaning he already knew the final goal he was working toward. Additionally, the Nightmare Spell was also helpful in understanding his own soul.[6] (Refer to the relationship to his other self)
- In Chapter 2904, Cassie shared the memories of his other self so he could truly know him.
- In Chapter 2905, the Mordret trapped in the mirror was broken and crying, unable to endure the burden of memories because, unlike the King of Nothing, he knew compassion and experienced them as torture.
- In Chapter 2988, having finally absorbed the last shard of himself after decades spent shattered and incomplete, he became whole and human again, though burdened by memories of both his cruel, vengeful self from the Dream Realm and the meek, compassionate self shaped by the Great Mirror.
