Overview

Show/Hide spoilers

Torment is one of the Six Plagues or Heralds of the Estuary.[1]

Appearance

A woman wearing a red dress, her face hidden by a veil. There seemed to be something entirely inhuman hiding beneath the flowing red fabric and for a split-second a black tentacle appeared.[2]

She was a Corrupted being whose form was a twisted horror of inhuman flesh beneath a veil and red dress, with dreadful things hidden beneath her skin and tentacles that carried her forward with swift and unpredictable movements.[3]

She was wearing a flowing garment of vibrant red fabric, a traditional robe for the priestess of Fallen Grace. Sunny mentioned that Torment and Cassie looked alike. Cassie's face was bare while she wears a veil.[4]

Under the veil revealed a beautiful face identical to Cassie's own, but devoid of life. Torment's Echo was hollow and expressionless just like all Echoes.[5]

Personality

Torment is too wild and damaged to devise a complex plan. However, Cassie believes Torment is the most dangerous of the Plagues due to her foresight.[6]

Her mind was consumed by an alien, demented madness, and her entire existence was described as endless anguish, making her desire to visit that torture upon everyone else, tear existence apart, and consume the sparks of the Flame, which filled her with loathing, sorrow, and irresistible hunger. She stood upon the head of a monstrous leviathan and commanded a vast Defiled armada, including sea monsters and abominations, as they advanced through the Great River to lay waste to human cities in the Tomb of Ariel. Torment moved through defenders like a bloody hurricane, capturing Ascended champions with her tentacles, ripping their bodies apart, or forcing them to look into her eyes before their screams faded, while absorbing their Flame to fuel her darkness.[3]

Ability

Foresight[6]

Torment's power has to do with memories, with remembering and forgetting. Torment put restrictions on her mind, turning her into a broken person who acted according to a set of predetermined choices. Almost as if creating a crude, miniature version of fate.[7]

Her fight against the Drowned burned the demon's memories, turning the Drowned warrior into a mindless shell.[8]

Trivia

  • Cassie's face had a subtle mix of revulsion, sorrow, and tenderness towards to echo of Torment.[5]
  • The message Torment had to deliver is related to Guiding Light. Torment's power blocked the memory, and the seal was removed once they reached Verge. After Cassie used it to activate the Guiding Light, the memory of it was erased from her mind. To whom or to what the True Name belongs to is powerful and can strain the mind and soul even just a few moments.[9]
  • In Chapter 2833, some of the things that happened inside their Third Nightmare became clear.
    • Cassie became trapped in a dreadful memory that she sensed she should never have witnessed, yet was powerless to escape. In it, she experienced the perspective of Torment, one of the Six Plagues of the Great River, a Corrupted being whose exquisitely beautiful upper body concealed a twisted horror of inhuman flesh and whose existence was defined by alien, frenzied madness and unending agony.[3]
    • It was revealed that Torment was a broken puppet bound by a web of conditions and prohibitions created by her past self, who had maimed her own mind, erased and falsified memories, and ensured that even in Corruption she would continue to follow a predetermined plan.[3]
