Blessings are not simply a temporary boon or simple skill, but a fundamental establishment of a relationship between Patron and a follower.
Blessings are an investment of records by a god to a mortal. These records increase the mortal's potential to progress to godhood and tie their path to that god.
Summary
Upon issuing a blessing, the god becomes a patron to the mortal. The god can gain from their investment in a variety of ways including new records when the mortal achieves something or faith from a new follower. There are seven levels in the blessing hierarchy. In order from lowest quality to highest, they are: Minor, Lesser, Intermediate, Major, Greater, Divine, and True. Additionally, some gods may require baptisms for their followers, marking them as adherents of that god.
It is expected that a blessed individual be a worshipper of the god who has blessed them. Individuals who have revoked a blessing but still get access to records associated with their former patron are called Heretics and are generally hunted by worshippers of that god. If their heresy becomes to extreme, they risk even being killed by the god themselves.
Benefits of Receiving a Blessing
Blessing have many benefits including:
- Raising the stats of those who receive them, both directly from the blessing and from the associated title.
- Granting a skill, chosen by the patron god when conferring the blessing, of a rarity that seems to be dependent on the level of blessing given.
- Allowing the blessed to pray to their patron god without the help of an external connection.
- Allowing the recipient to bless a statue to form a connection that others may use to pray to the patron god.
- Conferring records, especially related to the patron god, making it easier to inherit the Legacy of that god.
- Unlocking many entirely new options for class and profession upgrades, particularly those classified as clerical Professions, which requires the blessing of the patron god or an associated god in order to function.
Notable Exceptions
Blessing from Void Gods appear to function differently from other gods in the multiverse. For example, according to the Malefic Viper, they don't have levels to their blessings:
"Admittedly, I’m also unsure how their method of Blessings works. I know they don’t have levels like ours, so it may take more out of them to bless each person.”[1]
Trivia
- The Viper's extended absence, during which he did not issue any blessings, was a major contributing factor to the eroding influence of the Order of the Malefic Viper. Without his blessings, many opportunities were cut off and many Paths closed, entire subsections of Priests and other religion related classes rendered unavailable.[2]
