A heretic walks the Path of a god without permission. They aren’t blessed – even if many once had been – which imposes certain limitations. While they can gain Records related to the god as if blessed, it's a constant balancing game between caution and desire. If they get too greedy, the god could notice their existence and send people to hunt them down, while if they're too passive, they'll never properly progress.[1]

Sub-categories of Heresy

  • Heretic: A pure heretic that is walking the Path of a god without that god's permission
  • Heretic-Chosen: A path that is currently unique to Jake Thayne where he walks the path of his patron without being a worshiper or believing his patron to be his superior yet still has the divine favor of the Malefic Viper.
  • Divine Heretic: A mortal who has fought a god and survived. The god in this scenario does not have to be the patron of the mortal in question.
  • Usurper: A usurper is someone who forcefully seizes the Records of a fallen god, effectively becoming their second coming. The usurper could be viewed as the heretic version of being a Chosen.[2]

Known Heretics

  • William Hanson: A full heretic who once held the blessing of Eversmile. Despite having renounced his blessing, William continues to practice karmic magic, the signature field of his former patron.
  • Jake Thayne: Equal parts Heretic/Chosen, Jake follows the Legacy of the Malefic Viper but also pursues his own path as the Primal Hunter and Harbinger of Primeval Origins, believing that he will one day surpass the Viper. Jake has a bloodline which holds that he's not currently inferior to his patron, but merely hasn't yet reached his destined state of godhood. Jake is also a heretical practitioner of Umbra's legacy having gained skills built on her legacy without her permission.[3]
  • Tortaros: An S-grade follower of the Malefic Viper. Having survived a scrape with a god, Tortaros is Divine Heretic who behaves as though his ascension to godhood is only a matter of time. However, his arrogant behavior brings him to the attention of the Malefic Viper, a known risk of heresy that proves fatal for Tortaros.
  • Ell'Hakan: Used a usurper formation to seize the records of Yip of Yore after the god fell to the Viper.
