Article contents
Karmic magic is a field of magic dedicated to the tracking and manipulation of karmic bonds. To read a karmic thread, karmic mages look for a specific or thread. If they do not, they will see every single karmic thread a person has, including every single person they've ever met or influenced, both directly or indirectly. Karmic mages see actual threads of karma when using their skills.[1] A thread of karma can be followed from one person to another.
Karmic magic is a significant component of most forms of Divination.[1] Karmic mages are particularly valued for counterespionage and scouting. For practitioners of karmic magic, breaking promises is very harmful to their Path.[2] William states this explicitly to Jake and Villy has said similar things regarding why Eversmile's word can be trusted despite his generally manipulative personality.
Notable Practitioners
- Eversmile, the primordial of Karma.
- William Hanson
- The Guild Founder in the Neverending Journey Challenge Dungeon
- During the Prima Guardian event, the Primas were intrinsically tied to the Prima Guardian via karmic bonds.[3]
- The Rainbowfeather Songbirds use karmic bonds to track anyone who has harmed or killed a songbird so they can enact their revenge.[4]
Notable Exceptions
- Due to the Shroud of the Primordial, Jake cannot be tracked via karmic threads by anyone below Primordial levels of power. Additionally, because of the use of karma in divination, it will be difficult for anyone with divination skills to scry any event in which Jake is involved.
- Ell'Hakan uses his bloodline to customize karmic connections between himself and others to fit his preference.[5] On Nahoom, the entire population shares one unified karmic bond that bonds them to Ell'Hakan more strongly than anyone else in their life, including parents, partners, and children. The bond has created an adoration of Ell'Hakan that surpasses fanaticism, creating an unbreakable fanaticism centered around Ell'Hakan as a god-like being.
Karmic Plagues
Karmic plagues are a special type of karmic magic created by Eversmile that has long been outlawed in the multiverse. Directly affecting the soul's perception of choice and critical thinking,[6] karmic magic spreads much like a plague once someone has been infected. It is sometimes called a lineage curse since the biggest direct transfer of Records and karma occurs from parents to their children. If the parent is infected and then reproduces, the child will automatically inherit the plague.[7] With the plague proliferating through the gene pool, an entire planet can eventually fall to the plague.
Education about Karmic Plagues
The C-grade version of Nevermore contains five floors dedicated to introducing the multiversally agreed-upon rules and best practices. Including these floors prevents factions from being able to claim they were unaware of certain rules. Inclusion at C-grade was chosen because this is the point at which most denizens of the multiverse will first began to explore beyond their own planet and interact with other factions and cultures.
Floor forty-one is dedicated to teaching participants about plagues (in this case, a karmic plague), the danger they represent to the multiverse, and the proper response protocol if a plague is encountered. Generally, the only treatment for an already infected population is extermination. Those who are infected by a karmic plague will be heavily resistant to anything that would harm the plague. Any plague infested areas are to be quarantined.[8]
Trivia
- William states that he formed a faint karmic connection to Ell'Hakan during the latter's invasion of Earth. He then used that to track down the Nahoom planet whose location was hidden even from the gods, including the Malefic Viper, due to system restrictions on the nascent 93rd Universe.[5]
- The Wyrmgod was personally involved in the outlawing of karmic-based plagues.[7]
- The Wyrmgod, Villy, and Minaga all agree that Jake absolutely cannot be allowed to bring the karma plague-infected world core out of the floor forty-one dungeon because re-introducing an eradicated plague to the multiverse would be a disaster.
