Concepts are one of the three fundamental sources of power in the System, alongside stats and energy.[1] When an attack is made, the three most important aspects were how many stats the wielder has that affect the skill being used, how much energy is being applied, and how deep of a conceptual understanding the wielder has of the skill being used.
Conceptual understanding is the difference between an inferior rarity and divine rarity of the same skill being used in an attack.[1] Few concepts can stand alone. Most attacks use a composite with aspects from a number of concepts, such as an arrow in flight touching on concepts of wind, air, dust, dust, light, gravity, space, and more.
Forms of Concepts
Concepts come in two forms. The “logical” and the “nomological.” Most top-tier concepts are a mix of the logical and nomological, though some lean far more in one direction than the other. This can result in two people being able to learn the exact same concept, with one taking a logical and the other a nomological approach, but reaching very similar results.
Logical
Logical concepts could be understood through intense study. They could be endlessly practiced and understood, like a researcher delving into a particular subject. Learning a logical concept was a lifetime goal, even for gods. There was always more to learn, always a deeper layer one could dive into, one more level of understanding.
In-universe, Arnold is a good example of someone who takes a logical approach to understanding concepts and could probably methodically, but esoterically, explain his understanding.
Nomological
Nomological concepts were nearly the opposite of the logical. These were concepts that could not be put into words by the person who used them. Often mysterious, some simply had no truly logical aspect. One could attempt a logical analysis but never find a satisfying answer. Often, with nomological concepts, there was no true answer.
In-universe, Sylphie is a good example of someone who take a nomological approach to understanding the concepts she uses. She's very proficient with wind magic but would likely explain what she's doing by saying "Ree ree ree!" (or "The wind got super swooshy when I tried that so I knew that was right!" )
Understanding Concepts
According to Artemis, there are three traits common to those who excel at comprehending concepts[2]:
- They have a powerful imagination that can go beyond the ordinary
- They have an abstract worldview which allows them to see metaphors and meanings in things that others don't
- They have a strong understanding of themself and their place in the universe
The most common expression of someone deepening their understanding of a concept is a skill upgrade.[3]
Trivia
- Although it is not the focus of his Path, Jake has long had an instinctual connection to the concept of time, best seen with his creation of the Moment of the Primal Hunter, created all the way back in the tutorial. This connection to time also makes Jake more tolerant of time dilation, as noted by the Malefic Viper during the Trial of Myriad Poisons.
- Miyamoto is quite talented with the concept of time, but he also touched upon the concept of the void the very first time he travelled through it. However, his skill level at the time was not sufficient to capitalize on his insight.
- The Dao Sect specializes in mastering concepts above all else.[2]
