Tragedy
A Category Five Gate suddenly appeared in North America, and Broken Sword was away on an expedition in the Dream Realm and couldn't intervene in time. Immortal Flame and Smile of Heaven led the effort to stall the Nightmare Creatures, sacrificing themselves to evacuate the population. He refused to believe she was truly dead, convinced her soul had not been destroyed but was lost. This belief stemmed from her Aspect, which allowed her soul to wander and explore, making him think she was merely unable to return. Given the devastation in North America, her survival was only possible if she had reached the Category Five Gate and entered the connected Category Five Seed to challenge the Fifth Nightmare.[1]
Broken Sword's obsession with challenging the Fifth Nightmare became his driving goal, believing he had to rescue Smile of Heaven. This obsession fractured their group. Anvil, who had already suffered personal losses, saw this as madness and decided to kill Broken Sword.[1]
Broken Sword was completely consumed by the idea of resurrecting Smile of Heaven, to the point of neglecting his newborn daughter, Nephis.[2]
Death
When a Category Five Gate swallowed America, killing many, including Immortal Flame and Smile of Heaven. Losing Smile of Heaven was the final straw that made something snap inside Anvil. Desperate, he accepted a deal with Asterion, setting him on a path to kill Broken Sword.[3]
Cassie discovered that Weaver was the reason behind Broken Sword's death. However, before she could fully process this revelation, Jest broke free from her control and attacked, cutting her discovery short.[4]
However, in Chapter 2189, Ki Song listed the reasons he had to die.
Earth, as the Realm of War God, was not meant to have Awakened individuals or wielders of sorcery. When the Nightmare Spell penetrated its borders, it pushed humanity toward Ascension, contradicting the realm's natural laws. The higher one climb on the path to divinity, the more they are repelled by the laws governing the realm and feels like the world itself is rejecting them. Once one reaches the level of a Supreme, Earth begins to reject them, making it nearly impossible to return. It is almost certain that a Sacred human won't be able to set foot on Earth at all. Thus, if Broken Sword had continued his reckless pursuit of power, he would have ascended beyond the point where he could not protect humanity at all.[5]
They were the strongest warriors of humanity—Broken Sword, Anvil, Asterion, and Ki Song—who once fought together. However, after the events in America and the death of Smile of Heaven, tensions grew. Unlike Ki Song and Anvil, who did not want to abandon the waking world, Broken Sword refused to slow down, leading to irreconcilable differences between them.[5]
Since Obel's research suggested a direct correlation between the rise of powerful Awakened and the speed at which the Nightmare Spell consumed Earth, they fear that they will accelerate Earth's destruction. Broken Sword was the strongest among them and was growing more powerful with time, his continued rise threatened to trigger even faster destruction.[5]
After the Third Nightmare was conquered, Anvil secretly decided to kill Broken Sword—perhaps even earlier, after the catastrophe in America. He made a deal with the Dreamspawn first, drawing him to his side. Then, the two of them came to Ki Song. Betrayal was inevitable, as Anvil believed that Broken Sword's actions would bring disaster. The most decisive reason and could have hardly been fixed unless Broken Sword died is the one that Cassie learned from Jest's memories.[5]
Ki Song, Anvil, the Dreamspawn and Broken Sword secretly attempted the Fourth Nightmare a year after becoming Saints. They entered the Underworld where Broken Sword found the Seed of Nightmare. Even as Supremes, all they can do was escape. Unfamiliar with their power, they used the chance to stab Broken Sword in the back. Even facing all three of them, he remained a formidable opponent, and though they shattered his body and soul, they could not break his Will. Mortally wounded, Broken Sword fled into the darkness, never to be seen again. Ki Song insists that they killed him, as the Nightmare Spell eventually confirmed his death.[6]
Final Straw
- The Sovereigns needed to kill Broken Sword because he had come to possess Weaver's forbidden lineage, something that was never meant to exist.[7]
After the death of Smile of Heaven, Broken Sword became obsessed with finding her, believing she was trapped in a Nightmare. To challenge the Seed that had created the Category Five Gate in America, he sought immense power. Unlike his peers—Ki Song, Anvil, Asterion, and Smile of Heaven—who all possessed divine lineages, he had none.[7]
Determined to change that, he searched for an unclaimed Lineage Memory, hoping to inherit the power of the Shadow God. However, instead of Shadow's lineage, he found something else—a remnant of Weaver's lineage, secretly left behind by the Demon of Fate. Claiming this power, he unknowingly became an heir to Weaver, an existence that should not have been possible.[7]
This revelation forced the Sovereigns' hand. Though there were many reasons for their eventual betrayal, this was the decisive factor. Anvil, Asterion, and Ki Song could not tolerate his existence after he inherited Weaver's bloodline, leading them to orchestrate his death.[7]
Broken Sword was killed because he had absorbed Weaver's forbidden Lineage, a secret and abominable inheritance that should never have existed. This Lineage traced back to the Forgotten God, making anyone who bore it a potential vessel for his resurgence. According to Anvil, their hands were tied the moment Broken Sword accepted that curse. As the most revered hero of humanity, Broken Sword commanded admiration, love, and loyalty—forms of worship that, if directed at someone bearing the Forgotten God's blood, would propagate the deity's name, divinity, and power. The more he was known and loved, the closer the Forgotten God would come to awakening from his slumber. To prevent this catastrophic possibility, Broken Sword was betrayed and slain by his own comrades.[8]
