Rainbowfeather Songbirds are a species of birds Jake encountered in the Pantheon of Life C-grade Hunting Grounds. The species appears to use sound and light magic and to have high perception. Before D-grade, the Songbirds are flightless birds, their feathers giving them speed to run.[1]
If a member of the Rainbowfeather is attacked, they will give off a dying call that marks their killer with karmic magic and summons their flock.[2] Songbirds are highly territorial and will fight to the death to defend what they believe is theirs. Anyone who kills a Songbird will be hunted until they are dead or the entire flock has died.
Variants
Jake notes that most of the Rainbowfeather Songbird variants look nearly identical.[3]
Songcrusher
The songcrusher is the first variant of Songbird Jake encounters. He finds it hanging upside down from a tangle of vines. It has two long, ostrich-like legs covered in scales. It has thin chest, covered in feathers, and two wings with three-fingered hands on each side, similar to a bat, but the wings are covered in multi-colored feathers. The songcrusher has a head that is nearly identical to a macaw with a thick beak that appears capable of crushing any prey.[2]
The songcrusher has a sound-based attack, emitting a wave of force that sounds like an over-tuned subwoofer and is capable of blasting the bark off trees.
Songslinger
The Songslinger is able to absorb and amplify the attacks of the other Songbirds.[3]
Songbender
The Songbender uses a cloak of rainbow light as a shield against attacks. The cloak can be changed into a spear and used as an exploding projectile which ejects rainbow thorns. They can also summon a shower of crystalline rainbow fragments that are then launched like projectiles.[3]
Songmender
Has the ability to use rainbow light magic to heal other songbirds.[3]
Sovereign
The Rainbowfeather Sovereign is the B-grade leader of the Rainbowfeather Sovereign that live in the Pantheon hunting grounds. After being alerted of Jake's massacre of one of its flocks, the Sovereign first attempts to ambush Jake during its fight with the Grand Simivita Warlord. The Sovereign proved to be a skilled close combat fighter, often forcing Jake onto the defensive. However, during their fight, the remaining B-grades also attempt an ambush and both Jake and the Sovereign are forced to flee.[4]
After Jake kills nearly every B-grade who has shown aggression towards him, the Sovereign deduces that the best route to survival is to remove the thrill of the hunt. When Jake arrives for their rematch, the Sovereign absolutely refuses to fight. He admits that it's cowardly, but he's more interested in survival than honor. Instead, he points the Forest Fae, a more scheming opponent who will put up a fight.[5]
Trivia
- After killing his first Rainbowfeather Songbird, Jake is attacked by 71 other Rainbowfeather Songbirds at once.[3]
- In the aftermath of his massacre of the Rainbow Songfeather flock, Jake meets Jasper who requests a gift. Jake gives him a songbird monster core.[6] Later after his confrontation with the Rainbow Sovereign and being ambushed by a group of B-grades, Jake takes shelter in Jasper's hidden loot cave and the little creature watches over him while Jake rests and heals.
