Spells that manipulate space and time. Teleportation, summoning, time manipulation, phasing, dimensional gates and pocket dimensions all fall under this discipline. Dimensionalism is a notoriously difficult field of magic to practice. The spells require both great quantity of mana, excellent shaping skills and a great deal of complex theoretical knowledge to pull off.
Due to the high difficulty of the field, as well as the incredible potential for abuse many of its spells have, dimensionalism is not taught to beginning mages. Only by practicing other forms of magic may one eventually grow to a point where they can begin to tackle this field. Even then, access to dimensionalism is often restricted along political lines. All of this makes dimensionalism a fairly rare type of magic amongst mages and it’s vanishingly rare for someone to specialize in it – by the time a mage gains access to dimensionalism, they typically already have their primary specialty and are reluctant to change it. Most dimensionalists are mere dabblers.[1]
The basis of nearly all time or space–related spells is forming a dimensional boundary around the caster, and if that failed, so too would the spell. Shaping exercises exist to practice forming these dimensional boundaries.[2]
Spells
- Recall Spell - Summoning something to you. Pretty mana intensive, but easier when summoning a familiar.[3]
- Spell of Recall - A two-part spell that first marks an object as a recall anchor, and then teleports the user to said object when the second spell is cast.[4] Can bypass basic teleportation wards that inhibit targeting (such as the Dungeon's interference), though not more complicated wards that inhibit dimensional warping.[5] Each recall anchor incurs a constant mana drain on the caster.[6]
Items
- Recall Rods - Likely an implementation of the similarly named spell, recall rods teleport a person to a predetermined point.[7] Doesn't have to be in the form of a rod, as shown by Silverlake outside of the time loop.[8]
- Imperial Staff - Allows the user to place 6 undetectable recall points and teleport to them across any distance, with a 24 hour cooldown per point. Within the time loop, recall points placed by the staff persist between restarts.[9]
Creatures
As with many fields of magic, some creatures are innately attuned to dimensionalism. These include:
- Phase spiders, which can instinctively create pocket dimensions to hide in.[10]
- Blink toads, which can teleport short distances.[10]
- Voidsoul deer, which can bend space around them, causing attacks to miss.[10]
- Silverstripe moles, which are rumored to be able to detect dimensional cracks and boundaries.[10]
- Tunneler toads, which can detect and enter pocket dimensions.[11]
