The Third Paradox is a concept introduced in the description of [The Weave] through a dialogue between Oblivion and the Demon of Fate. It is presented as the mechanism by which fate—described as immutable and all-encompassing—could ultimately be changed.[1]
Concept of Fate
- Main article: Fate
According to the Demon of Fate, fate is the supreme force governing all existence. It cannot be changed, bargained with, or escaped because it transcends the distinction between past and future. Everything that has ever happened, is happening, and will happen is already inscribed within the threads of fate.[1]
The Demon of Fate further stated that fate exists above both the Flame and the Void, governing mortals, daemons, gods, and even the beings dwelling within the Void. Since fate does not recognize time, it is not a process unfolding through history but an immutable reality that has already transpired.[1]
Origin of the Third Paradox
Oblivion challenged the Demon of Fate's assertion by introducing the paradox of Chaos. She explained that because the ever-changing Void eventually gave birth to the unchangeable Flame of Desire, fate must likewise produce its own contradiction.[1]
According to Oblivion, if fate truly encompasses every possible event and outcome, it must inevitably give rise to something that cannot itself be encompassed or governed by fate. She identified this contradiction as the means through which fate can be changed, stating that creating such a paradox is how fate can be changed.[1]
Requirements
Avatar of Fate
After reading the description of [The Weave], Sunny reflected on the meaning of the avatar of fate. He noted that, unlike gods, fate possesses neither personhood nor consciousness and therefore cannot incarnate itself through a mortal vessel.[1]
Instead, he interpreted an avatar of fate as the manifestation or personification of fate itself—a living embodiment of inevitability whose existence alone enforces fate, regardless of personal intent. This interpretation led him to consider The Nine, all of whom possessed the [Fated] Attribute.[1]
Sunny's Interpretation
Sunny realized that the qualifications described by the Demon of Fate correspond to his own existence. As the bearer of the [Fated] Attribute, the wielder of the Shadow Slave Divine Aspect, and the inheritor of the completed lineage of the Demon of Fate through [The Weave], he fulfilled the three characteristics associated with the Third Paradox.[1]
Based on this realization, Sunny concluded that the "paradoxical abomination" mentioned by the Demon of Fate refers to himself.[1]
