The dream of the Night Garden was described as quiet and tranquil, with nothing dreadful or abominable discovered aboard the ancient ship. Its environment consisted of the rustling of leaves, the distant murmur of the waves, the gentle wind, and the falling rays of silver starlight. The Night Garden itself slumbered peacefully as its great mass sailed the tumultuous waters of the Stormsea. It was not exactly sentient, let alone sapient, which explained the serene and uneventful nature of its dream.[1]

Summary

In the Night Garden's dream, it appeared as a towering tree standing upon the surface of a calm sea, bathed in starlight and touched by warm winds. Millions of leaves rustled peacefully on its branches, echoing the murmur of gentle waves, while storm clouds gathered in the distance with the promise of cleansing rain. The dream was unusually tranquil, without horrors lurking beneath the waves or alien eyes watching from above. Despite Sunny's expectation of encountering hideous depth dwellers, devastating calamities, or even angry gods, there was only the serene night sky and the vast sea.[2]

The dream tree was far taller than the Soul Devourer in its final moments, though not as colossal as the World Tree, and was somewhat comparable to the giant tree at the center of Ariel's Game. The Night Garden saw itself as a tree—thriving, full of vibrancy and life, even if some parts showed disease with grey bark and rotting branches. Its branches brimmed with young buds, leaves, flowers, and even succulent fruits glowing in starlight. Among them was a large, bluish fruit, emanating cold air and surrounded by wisps of smoke, which drew Jet's attention.[2]

Sunny warned that the fruits were not real and could not satiate hunger, being only dream constructs rather than Spell-created Nightmares. Thus, there was nothing to be gained from them, nor anything for Nightmare—the Shadow—to battle or subjugate. Jet, however, remarked that she believed the luminous fruit represented her. She then explained that while the Night Garden was a vessel to its passengers, it seemed to view itself as a tree. To the dream, the passengers were parts of itself to protect and nurture. Jet pointed to the rustling leaves, saying each leaf represented a person living on the Night Garden, while those of higher Ranks were represented by flowers and fruit.[2]

Discovery

Reveal

Sunny and Jet discovered an image of a spellweave hidden in the stars of the Night Garden's dream, a vast and intricate pattern only Sunny could recognize with his Mind Weave. Spellweaves, a form of long-lost sorcery originating from Weaver, the Demon of Fate, are what make Memories and Echoes work, but are nearly impossible for most to master. Seeing it as a blueprint, Sunny painstakingly recreated the weave using shadow essence, sea monster soul shards, and a staff crafted from sacred wood. When he activated the completed staff, the Night Garden remained unharmed, but countless stars in the sky exploded.[1]

When Sunny activated the enchantment, dozens of constellations in the night sky seemed to explode. Some stars were extinguished, while others bloomed with shining auroras, collapsing in a radiant display of self-destruction. Despite consuming a vast amount of Sunny's essence, he knew he was not powerful enough to extinguish countless stars. The enchantment continued to draw essence from him, though as a Supreme, it posed no issue to sustain.[3]

The spell was left behind by Weaver and manifested as a strange spellweave in the skies. Once realized, it altered the real sky, creating the illusion of vanished and blazing stars. The enchantment appeared mysterious, with no immediate harmful effects, but its true purpose was unclear.[3]

The spell's purpose was connected to the Stormsea, a place where space itself behaves strangely and navigation is notoriously treacherous. Ordinary methods of sailing were unreliable because locations shifted, courses looped back, and travelers often ended up in hostile or unexplored waters. In the Stormsea, the stars were the only dependable means of navigation, though they too were mystical and difficult to read.[3]

The Nightwalkers of the House of Night, inheritors of the Storm God's lineage, were able to navigate seas by the stars. Since the stars were essential for travel in the Stormsea, the altered starry pattern left by Weaver's spellweave could represent a map.[3]

Weaver's spellweave might be more than an enchantment — it could show a path through the Stormsea. Sunny believed that the fragment of Weaver's lineage he was searching for would be found in the mysterious place indicated by the altered stars. However, Jet admitted she was not skilled enough yet in star navigation to confirm the path, though she mentioned she knew people who could.[3]
