Article contents
The Test of Character is one of five Challenge Dungeons available to C-grade participants of the World Wonder, Nevermore. Competing in these Challenge Dungeons is essential for anyone hoping to place high on the Nevermore Leaderboards.
The Test of Character is the Challenge Dungeon the Wyrmgod exerts the most control over. In reality, the dungeon is not actually for the benefit of the participants. Instead, it allows the Wyrmgod to gather data points about the participants' character, personality, morals, quirks, and thought processes. It also allows him to identify potential weaknesses that might prevent the participant from reaching the peak. This information is then packaged and sold to whoever is interested.[1] Many factions have a running subscription for these packages in order to assess if a participant is a good fit for recruitment. However, some information will never be sold such as the results of a Chosen or the result of a young prospect to a rival faction.
System Description
You have entered the Test of Character Challenge Dungeon. This dungeon is composed of an anthology of events and scenarios for you to experience and live through as you influence the stories while embodying characters within these stories.
As a character, you are both the controller of the outcome of this story and a silent passenger. You are free to choose between controlling the current character you inhabit or letting the original story play out as a simple bystander. Taking control allows you to change the course of the story to create an outcome you find ideal based entirely on your own judgment.
During this Challenge Dungeon, you are fully capable of using your full stats, though some skills may be limited. All current items and equipment have been confiscated and shall be returned upon exiting the Challenge Dungeon. Each story has a final choice you will be presented with that will also mark the beginning of the end of the current story and allow you to move on to the next. Stories can be ended before the final choice is presented should certain actions be taken. Be warned that should the character you are inhabiting die, the story will immediately end, and you will move on to the next. The death of the character you are inhabiting will have no negative effects on you but may influence your evaluation during the Test of Character Challenge Dungeon.
Objective: See the anthology through to its end.
Scenarios
The following are some of the scenarios presented to Jake during his dungeon run:
Scenario 1
Jake is inhabiting a human city guard. The Beast King of a nearby kingdom is on the move and headed toward the city, likely wanting to grow the power of his army by kill the inhabitants of the human city of experience points. The Beast King is D-grade, far beyond anything the E-grade and F-grade humans can handle. The city officials must decide what to do: evacuate the city, fight back while reinforcing the city walls, allow a few select people to leave, or figure out how to negotiate with the Beast King.
Jake proposes hunting down the Beast King. As result, everyone in the human war party dies, including Jake's character. However, they also managed to kill the Beast King, saving the city. The city thrived for a while before it was eventually abandoned as an unknown faction invaded the land and the city residents chose to relocate.
Scenario 2
Jake is inhabiting the body of a Peak E-grade advisor to the early D-grade local warlord. The advisor is tasked with helping the warlord decide how to allocate resources to the various craftsman guilds.
Jake chooses to allow the scenario to play out without interfering. As a result, the masonry guild received the resources, built a statue of the warlord, and the advisor's approval level increased.
Scenario 3
Jake is inhabiting the body of a young man who is being forced into an arranged marriage against his will to a much older duke. The duke has a terrible reputation and the young man's family doesn't approve of the marriage but they are afraid to oppose the noble because he is part of the royal family and could cause severe problems for the entire family.
Jake chooses to rip off the head of the duke when the older man attempts to do something unmentionable. He then allows the character to resume control, under the impression that he has been temporarily possessed by a divine being. With Jake's bloodline aura as proof, the young man is recognized a semi-divine being, his family is uplifted by the royal family, and the duke's entire faction is purged.
Scenario 8
Jake is inhabiting the body of a slaver and must decide to whom he will sell his merchandise. Some potential buyers want to use the slaves as soldiers, some want them for human experiments, one wanted more workers, and some want to buy the slaves to free them all.
Jake chooses to free all the slaves and kill himself after killing all the slavers who wanted to buy the slaves, save for the one who wanted to buy them to emancipate them. As a result, the slave all escape and run away. Some find true freedom, some are recaptured, and some die, unable to live independently. However, the majority are picked up and saved by the guy who wanted to free them.
Scenario 12
Jake is inhabiting the body of a man suspected of mass murder who has been thrown into solitary confinement for potential crimes against humanity. Neither Jake nor the character truly know if he is guilty of the crimes of which he has been accused as the character has no memories of the past week.
Jake uses the time in confinement to update his Fear Gaze skill to Primal Gaze of the Apex Hunter. Later, when a doppleganger guard comes to kill the character to make sure the character takes the fall for the crimes, Jake uses his newly updated Gaze to make the doppleganger turn on his backer. However, the dopplegangers have deeply infiltrated the justice system, requiring Jake to round up nearly two dozen shapeshifters and threaten them within an inch of their lives before he is able to exonerate his character.
Achievements
Each Challenge Dungeon can grant a Grand Achievement upon completion for quality performances. These achievements grant a percentage multiplier ranging between 5-20% with 20% given if the participant fully completed the challenge with outstanding performance. 20% is generally viewed as the "maximum". However, a 25% multiplier can be granted to those who achieve the "impossible" within the challenge.
