Show/Hide spoilers

The human population increased in the citadels, making the use soul shards as currency unsuitable. As a replacement, the Great Clans began minting their own coins, each containing a small amount of essence, and their value was supported by the shard treasuries each clan possessed. Many Awakened carried coins for emergencies, as they could absorb this essence.[3]

Coins minted in Bastion and Ravenheart were intended to be identical, each containing a set amount of soul essence. However, the minting and infusion process was not entirely precise, leading to slight variations in the final product. These inconsistencies arose not only between different mints but also between different batches produced by the same mint. Generally, Ravenheart coins held more value, although their worth was influenced by various additional factors.[2]

In addition to the coins currently minted in Bastion and Ravenheart, there were also coins from the fallen Song and Sword Domains. These older coins were generally of inferior quality compared to modern coinage, yet they held significantly more value due to their rarity. The Song and Sword Domains had only minted coins for a few years before vanishing from history, ensuring that no new coins from these regions would ever be produced by humans. Their limited quantity continued to decrease, as essence coins could be consumed for a boost of essence in difficult situations. This rarity alone caused their value to rise, driven by the human tendency to attribute worth to items simply because others could not easily possess them.[2]

Soul Shards

Main article: Soul Shard

In the Dream Realm, normal money has no value.[4] Instead, Soul Shards are the main medium of exchange, especially among Awakened.[5][6][7]

Soul shards in the waking world only came from two sources:[8]

  • Brought back by Ascended and Transcendent from their journeys into the Dream Realm.[8]
  • Scavenged from the corpses of the Nightmare Creatures that had invaded reality through a Gate.[8]

Value

The value of shards is not uniform; it depends on the rank. The higher rank shards cost more. Also, it seemed people cared about what Nightmare Creature the crystal came from, and how it had been defeated. There were collectors among the wealthy mundane humans who were very interested in this sort of thing. Some superstitious Awakened also believed, for some reason, that absorbing "bad" shards would be detrimental to the purity of their souls.[9]

Trades

- Soul shards trade for Memories.[5][10][11]
- Trade real-world items for soul shards.[12]
