Description
The Black Water was described as a stain of oily black water that stretched in all directions, far and wide, darkening the distant horizon. It was a mysterious and malevolent phenomenon that haunted both the Stormsea and the oceans of Earth.[2]
Nobody knew what the currents of the Black Water truly were. Some considered it to be a kind of Nightmare Creature, others thought it to be the remains of an ancient Terror torn into thousands of pieces thousands of years ago, while some even believed it was the blood of an Unholy Titan spilled by the gods at the dawn of time. Regardless of its true nature, seeing the water turn black often meant death for those who entrusted their lives to the sea.[1][2]
The Black Water is not really sentient, so it is best to just avoid it.[1]
Trivia
- The Black Water is not the same as the Forgotten Shore's dark sea. On the surface, they appear similar, but Dark Sea is much larger and more powerful that it's a miracle to be able to seal it by mere Sleepers.[1]
- Sunny's first encounter with the Black Water had happened on the way to Antarctica, before the Chain of Nightmares consumed the Southern Quadrant. At that time, it had seemed utterly indestructible, in an entirely different category than things that could be destroyed, resembling more a force of nature than a creature.[1][2]
- When the Night Garden entered the black waters, the oily darkness infecting the ocean did not remain but simply vanished. The Night Garden had absorbed the Black Water just like it would any other Nightmare Creature or sustenance, erasing it from the surface of the world.[2]
