The Mycotic Depths is an asteroid field roughly the size of a galaxy, where each and every asteroid is held together by fungal growths, resulting in the environment changing on a regular basis. Located in the 13th Universe, the fungal growths are effectively one massive life form with a semi-shared mind known as the Mycotic Consciousness.
There are multiple entrances to the Depths. The portals that lead to the lowest levels are safe for relatively powerful C-grades. Other portals lead to increasingly hazardous areas full of priceless treasures, including alchemical ingredients suitable for gods.[1] However, the environment is also extremely dangerous filled with toxic spores capable of killing gods and natives creatures surpassing the level of Godking.[1]
According to the Malefic Viper, while powerful monsters and unique treasures spawn in the Depths, this specific World Wonder is not considered particularly valuable in comparison to the others because, as of the integration of the 93rd Universe, the Depths has never spawned a System Event nor granted any title specific to exploring it.[2]
Story Summary
Viridia visits the 13th Universe with an entourage of A- and S-grades and a handful of gods to provide protection for the Hall the Witches of the Verdant Lagoon set up on the Great Planet nearest to the Mycotic Depths.[1] Viridia notes that this particular World Wonder is possibly the most important of all the World Wonders to the Order because of its high level chemical ingredients, particularly those suitable for use by gods. While Viridia is preparing the Hall for an expedition of C- and B-grades from the Order, she encounters the Malefic Viper himself. The Viper is particularly fond of the Mycotic Depths, saying that the Depths make him nostalgic for the early days of his time in the System following the integration of the first universe.
Much later, when Jake makes contact with the Viper during his involuntary break from the World of the Exalted Prima, the Viper indicates that the body with Jake is an avatar while his true body explores the Mycotic Depths. Knowing how much Jake despises mushrooms, Villy teases his Chosen with descriptions of all the different mushrooms he's eating even as they're talking.[3] It is later revealed that the Viper's visit actually serves dual purposes, as he is also searching for the unknown faction that attempted to kidnap Jake from the Void during Jake's return trip to the Order from the Pantheon of Life.[2]
