The Weeping occured in the aftermath of the Splinter Wars. It was an illness spread among the soldiers which anybody could catch. The disease was a death sentence, as no cure was found and magic could do nothing to stop it. Once contracted one would first suffer from a strong fever which would incapacitate them, delirium would follow and then blindness. In its final phase, blood would start leaking out of the victim eyes before they finally died.[1]

The epidemic took 8-10% of Altazia's population, it spread with seemingly no rhyme or reason and destroyed some families while leaving others untouched. Both its origin and the reason for its disappearance are a mystery.[1]

The Weeping cost the Triumvirate Church a lot of goodwill since they were considered the foremost experts in the healing arts, but were completely unable to stop it.[2]

Plot relevance

The Weeping killed yet more battlemages, besides those already killed in Splinter Wars. (For example, Zach Noveda became the only living member of his House.) As a result, Cyoria's Royal Academy of Magical Arts started admitting more students. This, however, also led to a simplification of the curriculum.

The Weeping happened less than four years before the events in the story, as Kana Tverinov is stated to be three year old, and her mother died in the Weeping; it happened more than two years before, as Akoja Stroze states the academy would never admit her before the Weeping[3].
