The Controller is a person who is to benefit from the time loop. Only the Controller is supposed to be able to exit the time loop[1]. His soul is moved into the "time loop" reality into a copy of his body by the Sovereign Gate when the time loop starts, as opposed to everyone else who is copied in both body and soul[1].
The Guardian of the Threshold stated that "The Controller is marked by the Key, by the Maker, or by its agents", where "the Maker" is the maker of Sovereign Gate.[1]
The Controller's soul marker
Controller's soul is disinguished by a marker embedded in it - the Controller marker.
Its known functions include:
- Marking the Controller's soul for moving into a new copy of his body in each restart. Presumably it is needed to locate or distinguish his soul when the in-loop world is destroyed at the end of each restart, since it seems to activate when the restart is ended for any reason.[2][3] This function is also performed by temporary, or "lesser" markers, which allow persistence for 6 restarts only.[1]
- Triggering a restart on "significant tampering" with the Controller's mind or soul. The marker seems significantly less sensitive to unstructured mind magic than to the structured one. Pulling the Controller's soul out of the body is apparently sufficient to trigger a restart. This function is inactive in Zorian's copy of the marker.[3]
- Allowing the Controller to trigger a restart at will[4].
- Allowing access to the control room of the Sovereign Gate[5] and talking or giving verbal orders to the Guardian of the Threshold, including exiting the time loop. (When the Controller exits the time loop, only the soul is transported outside[1], and the marker is not removed[6].)
- Exiting the control room. (This can also be done by a verbal request to the Guardian of the Threshold[1].)
- Allowing access to hidden functions of The five treasures of the Ikosian Emperor. (It is not stated in the story whether these functions even exist outside the time loop).
- Detecting the presence of any of The five treasures of the Ikosian Emperor[1] nearby.
- Serving as a kind of "bridge" between the Key and the control room[7].
The Controller marker and temporary markers contains some parts made of divine energies[8].
The Ghost Serpent, the spirit worshipped by the Ghost Serpent Acolytes, referred to the marker as "the Brand" and the Controllers as "Branded Ones".[2]
Plot relevance
Zach is the legitimate Controller, Zorian has a defective[9] copy of the Controller's marker after Quatach-Ichl toys with them, casting at them a spell which Kael tentatively identifies[10] as soul meld based on the spell chant. Zorian infers from that that the marker is self-repairing to an extent.[11] The defects prevent Zorian's marker from sending a restart signal on mind or soul tampering[3].
Zorian discovered that he is able to track Zach, exploiting the fact his marker is a copy of Zach's, by means of a tracking ritual.[11]
Zorian is able to access Controller's privileges until Zach presents the the Key to the Guardian of the Threshold. This causes Panaxeth to take notice, possess the Guardian, and talk to Zorian and the temporary loopers. Later in the same restart the Guardian says to Zach about Zorian: "He is an anomaly." and "The anomaly can access Controller privileges even though he is not one. I am unable to do anything about that at the moment, but do not worry – the mistake will be corrected at the end of this cycle, when the world is recreated again." Panaxeth then possessed the Guardian again and told Zorian that "I have managed to stop the Guardian from rescinding all your Controller privileges".[12]
Finally, Zorian uses the tracking ritual to wake up Zach after exiting the time loop[6].
