Article contents
Abjuration is the name given to the Cursed Demon that wields the power of rejection, renouncement, and negation.[1]
Description
A towering mountain of grey flesh overgrown with scarlet moss, from which a hundred revolting limbs extend like a dreadful forest. Its form is grotesque and formless, and simply being near it induces a visceral, paralyzing fear. It is further revealed to be covered in countless monstrous eyes that open across its body, enhancing its grotesqueness and amplifying its ability to interact with the world through perception. These eyes are not merely passive; they are dangerous in their awareness, capable of sensing when someone looks at them.[2]
Ability
Its ability allows it to deny anything, causing the denied element to cease to exist or be erased from reality. This power is not merely defensive; it is a malignant Will that is vast, oceanic, and oppressively firm in its malevolence. When Nephis attacked it with a destructive ray of pure white light, the attack was not resisted or deflected—it was simply extinguished and canceled by Abjuration's authority.[1]
The creature's denial was so absolute that the concept of the attack doing harm was rendered false. Its negation ability operates by proclaiming something as untrue, which then becomes reality. The strength of this power is so immense that even powerful individuals like Mordret fled from it, and it was considered a miracle that Sunny's Shadow (Nightmare (Black Steed)) had once managed to lull it to sleep.[1]
History
In Chapter 2230, Mordret was caught off-guard by the appearance of the Cursed Demon from Effie's Beast Locket, and though surrounded by his Transcendent vessels, he was slow to react. The creature, capable of "sensing someone's gaze and gazing back", became aware of Mordret the instant he recognized it. The Lord of Shadows, who had previously frightened Mordret, considered him enough of a threat to offer this monstrous "gift".
Nephis faced the Cursed Demon—an ancient, fallen God called Abjuration who wielded the terrifying power to negate and erase anything it denied—Nephis drew strength from her will, her desire, and the countless lives tied to her, even as her own attacks were simply nullified by the creature's overwhelming authority. As she struggled against the Cursed Demon's absolute power of Abjuration, which could erase even her existence by sheer force of Will, she countered by fully embracing her own—one fueled by humanity's collective yearning and her own burning desire. Channeling that overwhelming Will into her sword, her flames, and a terrifying Verse of True Names, Nephis transformed into a radiant, winged giant of white flame and struck back with divine force, momentarily causing even the ancient Nightmare Creature to cower.[3]
Nephis' attacks had initially failed to harm Abjuration, whose authority had denied even the laws of reality, nullified her flame and restricted her movement. The Cursed Demon, embodying the very concept of abjuration, had escalated the battle by attempting to erase Nephis' existence entirely. Refusing to yield, Nephis had summoned the full force of her Will, strengthened by her connection to humanity and fueled by longing and desire. She had unleashed a devastating, divine assault—channeling her True Names, igniting the world in white fire, and revealing her Transcendent form, momentarily forcing even the ancient horror to cower.[4]
Nephis and Abjuration clashed in a devastating battle that split reality between blazing fire and absolute cold, each shaped by their opposing Wills. Nephis, fueled by the Domain of Longing and linked to billions of souls, fought with light and flame, while Abjuration, denied heat and existence itself. As the fight wore on, Nephis grew weaker with each blow, her flame and connection to humanity fading, while Abjuration exploited that very bond to attack. In a desperate final act, Nephis embraced her pain and invoked the Name of Passion to end the Cursed Demon.[5]
Trivia
- In Chapter 1792, Sunny mentioned that Nightmare is busy with an important task of lulling a Cursed rank to sleep.
