Ghost King is a title that can only be granted with the permission of the Blightfather or one of his most trusted aides. Although not an official rank, the title comes with specific responsibilities and expectations for the recipient.

Being named Ghost King means the Risen believe the recipient has a high chance of reaching godhood if properly nurtured. The title can only be granted to those B-grade or below. Of all the currently living Ghost Kings, the vast majority have reached at least S-grade, proving that the title is granted only to supreme geniuses.

However, mere talent is not enough to be given the title of Ghost King. The recipient must also have merit, to have earned achievements that helped the Risen in a substantial way. Azal, for example, gained his Ghost King title through battle and tournaments against the Holy Church. As an E-grade, he fought the enemy faction, eventually being granted the elusive title shortly before being teamed up with Casper for Nevermore.[1]

Although Casper felt his title was undeserved, granted simply because of his connection to Jake, Azal summarized Casper's meritorious feat as: led negotiations in the most contested planet in the most contested galaxy in the new universe and established a permanent presence and equal access rights for the Risen on said planet while the Holy Church, their greatest nemesis, was fully pushed out of the galaxy.
