The Dark Wanderer was described as something that had always existed in the Tomb of Ariel, appearing once in a few generations and moving across the sky like a comet made out of pure terror. No one had ever been able to see what was hidden beneath the churning darkness surrounding it. People believed it had been an omen of great destruction, though Ananke said it might also have been a Corrupted being of immense power, or simply a manifestation of the dying Great River as the realm created by Ariel slowly came undone.[1]

After the Great River died, it began to appear more often, and it had been seen before major calamities such as the final siege of Verge, which had ended in great devastation. It was also described as something that, upon its appearance, made the sky seem to ripple while vast darkness escaped from rifts in the heavens, with a formless dark presence plunging into the River and bringing catastrophic destruction. Ananke further suggested that it might have been passing above even at that time, though without the suns, it could no longer be seen.[1]

History

At that moment of destruction, the sky above Weave was described as rippling, as a vast darkness escaped from rifts torn in the azure expanse like a flood. A dark and formless presence then plummeted into the River, striking the heart of the city where the Temple of the Nightmare Spell stood, and the impact shattered and drowned most of Weave instantly.[1]

Truth

The Dark Wanderer came about when Sunny and the Vile Thieving Bird, locked in their deific battle across the maze of fractured time, escaped once more into the azure sky and plummeted toward the Great River below. As they fell, tearing each other apart, Sunny saw the city of Weave on the day it fell to the onslaught of Nightmare Creatures and realized the truth of the "evil omen" Ananke had spoken of. The mysterious mass of darkness that countless people had seen traversing the sky of the Tomb of Ariel across the centuries, thousands of years possibly, was in fact them. Sunny, Nephis, and the Vile Thieving Bird. What the River People had witnessed as the Dark Wanderer across vast stretches of history were merely seconds of their harrowing battle in the maze of fractured time, where for those watching centuries passed between sightings, but for Sunny and the Thieving Bird no more than a few heartbeats passed.[2]

When they crashed into the heart of Weave, the impact annihilated the temple of the Nightmare Spell and obliterated the Nightmare Creatures there with an annihilating shockwave. The force ravaged the core of the swarm, giving the warriors defending the escaping island-ships a chance to retreat, even as Weave itself was torn apart, destroyed, erased from existence. Afterward, Sunny and the Vile Thieving Bird plunged into the cold depths, where another fissure swallowed them, carrying their battle onward into another time and causing the Dark Wanderer to continue appearing throughout the centuries as fleeting glimpses of their passage through broken eternity.[2]
