The Ark Amulets were described as lesser versions of the Ark, created when the River People realized their situation was untenable and sought to postpone their extinction for as long as they could. Each of the seven strongest Transcendent champions, known as Ark Guardians, was entrusted with one Ark Amulet, which took the form of an enchanted locket that contained a small pocket dimension of its own, its inhabitants frozen in time. The remaining River People surrendered themselves to the Ark Amulets, allowing their entire population to be preserved within these contained dimensions as the guardians scattered across the Great River in hopes that at least one would survive. The amulets themselves were later revealed to be seven flawlessly white lockets, seemingly carved from the same bone, each marked with different carvings such as a dog, fish, or beetle.[1]
Although all other Ark Guardians eventually perished, Ananke recovered their amulets, meaning that all that remained of the River People — including people from Fallen Grace, Weave, the River Nomad tribes, and descendants of the Outsiders — were preserved within them, amounting to dozens of thousands of people kept under her protection and care.[1]
