“ The Spell is not a translator! Do you think it has the time to express the intricacies of human speech? Let's say you're seeking shelter in a ruin and find an inscription that reads "certain death ahead". There are thirty words for death in the rune language! Just by knowing the runes, you'll be able to deduce what kind of danger there is! ” ― Julius to Sunny,
Chapter 25 Wilderness Survival
The Runic Language is the language that the Nightmare Spell itself used.[1]
Nightmare Spell Language
The Spell communicated with humans in one of the dead languages called Runic language. By understanding the grammatical structure of the language, it was easy to extend the meaning of the runes into a more correct translation. For example, there were different runes for the word "change", each with its own connotation. Depending on what exact rune was used to relay the meaning of the word, a small change in wording and connotation could mean a world of difference in real life.[2][3]
Runes are used by the Spell to display the status or information of the Awakened.[4] Even without sight, Awakened can still perceive their own runes and communicate with the Spell. It was both strange and logical.[5]
There are two types of forbidden runes and two things that the Spell did not know how or did not want to mention.[6]
Etymology
Many of the Dream Realm languages were similar to each other a long time ago almost as if they shared a common source. Among them, the runic language of the Nightmare Spell was the closest to that source, but it was merely an adaptation of it. While the Runic Language is powerful and ancient, it is not the original but a derivative of the one true language believed to be woven into the very fabric of existence. The one true language is a language where every word was a True Name, the language of the gods.[1]
