Obel Scale is the spelltech system that the government uses to detect signs of a manifesting Gate.[1] It is a very complicated spelltech system that was used to predict the appearance of Gates across the globe.[2]
How it works
Depending on the Category of a Gate, it differs in potency and characteristics, spreads over a certain radius, and affects a certain volume of space. The more powerful the Gate, the greater the impact. The Gate pulse spreads through space and time, so if one knows what to look for, one can detect faint aftershocks before they appear. This requires a network of sensors and satellites to monitor the entire globe.[3]
Background
Obel was the name of a scientist who developed this spelltech system.[1]
The "Obel Scale" is a primitive work created by Obel and his colleagues in the early days of the Spell. It can track and predict manifestation events but does not explain how and why they are happening. Back then, they only needed an immediate and effective measure.[3]
Back when North America became unhabitable, the Obel Scale went out of alignment, making its detection scope unreliable. Finally, a Category Five Gate appeared, and everything returned to normal.[2]
A few years ago, the government began to notice growing irregularities in the readings again. Sometime after the investigation, they concluded that something massive was about to occur again. This time instead of one massive Gate, there will be a sort of chain reaction. Hundreds of smaller Gates will open in rapid succession, allowing countless Nightmare Creatures to invade the real world.[2]
Due to this, the government has been preparing a massive operation for the past two years. But the situation shifted much faster. The timeline has been advanced by at least several years making their current preparations completely inadequate. They must evacuate nine hundred million people from the doomed continent while being pursued by an endless horde of Nightmare Creatures.[2]
