Nightmare, who previously grew in rank by consuming Memories with the Spell, had to feed on powerful creatures' dreams, subjugating them and consuming them to reach a higher rank, despite the slow and dangerous process.[2][3]

Nightmare's evolution was announced in Chapter 2110. The Black Steed evolved as a result of the mass death of the subdued immortals trapped within the Dark Castle. These immortals, whose minds and identities were gone but whose bodies and souls remained intact and endlessly revived, had previously been caught in Nightmare's maze of dreams, where every being that died served to strengthen him by turning their souls into fuel in the furnace of his Ascension. However, Nightmare had been fighting an uphill battle because his victims could not truly die. When Sunny opened the Gate of Shadow and rendered the immortals mortal again, they finally perished, allowing thousands of ancient and exceedingly powerful souls to become nourishment for Nightmare. This sudden surge of soul energy pushed him across the threshold of evolving to a new Rank, resulting in Nightmare attaining the status of a "Supreme Terror".[4]
