Shadow Slave ranks and classes: the two scales explained
Rank and class answer different questions in Shadow Slave. This reference explains the system’s names, including later tiers, without listing any character’s current rank, future victories or story milestones.
| Human soul rank | Human title | Creature rank |
|---|---|---|
| Dormant | Sleeper | Dormant |
| Awakened | Awakened | Awakened |
| Ascended | Master | Fallen |
| Transcendent | Saint | Corrupted |
| Supreme | Sovereign | Great |
| Sacred | Spirit | Cursed |
| Divine | God | Unholy |
Rank measures the quality of a soul core
Human soul ranks run from Dormant to Divine. Everyday human titles such as Sleeper, Master and Saint refer to positions on that scale. Nightmare Creatures use another set of names from the third tier onward; the table puts the corresponding tiers beside one another.
The order in the table runs from the lowest tier to the highest. A corresponding tier is a way to read the terminology, not a guarantee that a particular human and creature would be evenly matched.
Class counts cores: Beast through Titan
Nightmare Creature classes describe the number of soul cores: Beast has one, Monster two, Demon three, Devil four, Tyrant five, Terror six and Titan seven. This is a separate axis from rank, so Titan is not an eighth rank above Unholy.
For this basic comparison, keep the class scale attached to Nightmare Creatures. Do not assign every human one of these seven labels or assume an Aspect’s rank is the person’s present soul rank. Individual exceptions and progression belong in spoiler-marked character articles.
How to read “Fallen Demon”
As a terminology example, “Fallen Demon” combines a rank, Fallen, with a class, Demon. Fallen is the third creature rank; Demon means three soul cores. The two words are not competing descriptions of the same property.
The labels are a starting assessment of a creature. Abilities, preparation and circumstances also affect a battle; rank and class alone do not give a precise prediction of its outcome.

Aspirant is a status encountered in the opening: chapter 2 shows that label alongside a Dormant soul core. It is a useful reminder to distinguish a person’s status, the core and an Aspect instead of treating every word on a status page as one level.
