The Sun Realm, in the distant past, had not yet been discovered by Doom or the Nightmare Spell. It is associated with Mictlan, a vast and prosperous city ruled by Ketzelkan, one of the Divine Children who carried the Blood of the Sun in their veins.[1]

In that earlier era, the Ash was shallower, Ash Nomads still traveled the land, Inti had not yet created the asuras, and Shatana the Traitor had not yet cast the veil upon the White Abyss, indicating that the Sun Realm existed in a comparatively less ruined state.[1]

The Sun Realm later became a boundary from which Nightmares bloomed, bringing untold horrors from beyond the boundary of the Sun Realm, signaling that it was ultimately penetrated and corrupted by the influence of the Nightmare Spell and Doom.[1]

The Sun Realm had endured constant siege by the Corruption, particularly through the Jungle surrounding Mictlan, giving it a history of warfare and the sacred duty of keeping the Sun Killer from being reborn. Its people had produced myriad heroes, and after the Nightmare Spell fell, their numbers and power grew, including the sorcery to create asuras that allowed Awakened to fight creatures far beyond their natural strength. Despite its strength, the Sun Realm faced the looming threat of Doom, which threatened to destroy its armies, fortresses, and temples, leaving the hope of survival dependent on the birth of new gods.[2]
